It's weird because I feel like there needs to be something added to keep the tradition of Chiarelli totally screwing himself but at the same time Bergevin's just as adept at burning himself at trades. I've entered the nexus of the universe with this one lol.

/Patches' next contract, especially if he has a good year in Edmonton, would likely make this difficult. I just can't really think of any other players Edmonton might be able to get for the 10th pick that would help them in any way shape or form. They aren't getting a top 4 d-man in return for that (the last one of those they got cost them a Hart candidate lol), and there aren't really any wingers of Max's (historic) calibre that would really help them.

A little OT but I’ve wondered a bit lately if the NHL should move their UFA period up a few weeks so it happens prior to the draft. Just using MTL’s current situation as an example, say they did get another draft pick in the 10-15 range and now have that and the #3 pick. Teams rarely trade the high picks so it’s almost certain they’ll keep it and draft someone who will be useful in 2-4 years, but they’ve been rumoured as a landing spot for Tavares for a long time. Say the UFA period was the week before the draft and they managed to sign JT, they could promise him they'll use their picks to surround him with talent, they then might be inclined to use their draft wealth (they also have 4 second rounders this year) to surround him with talent and try to contend. How many teams have been in similar positions in recent years, especially with the current lottery format? Maybe Dallas would’ve found a reason to move their pick last season.

I feel like it would induce a little more action into draft weekend, which it needs to be honest because other than 2015 it’s become a pretty dull period transaction-wise.

I thought the consensus was this was a relatively weak draft year, after the first 3 or so.

If true, not sure what a #10 or 4 second rounders are really worth, but time will tell.

Eh. Last year it was basically the top 2 and then "meh" pre-draft but here we are a year later and while the top two did fine in their rookie years and nobody else from the first round made a dent in the NHL there's pretty big hype for guys like Pettersson and Mittelstadt who went 5th and 8th.

But the tenth pick even in something deemed a "good" draft isn't typically worth anything of high value. When the Canucks traded Schneider for the 9th pick it was because their guy was still on the board in what panned out to be a very good year for centres (save for one certain blue-and-white team). I don't think anybody could pull off getting someone like that for the 10th pick unless they were really high on somebody.

Sadly I've been researching this draft for several months now.

IMO there is a clear cut #1 and a clear cut #2 and the next 8 are pretty similar value-wise.

Dahlin and Svech will contribute right away but there is some pretty high upside or to a guy like Oliver Wahlstrom or a late riser like Kotkaniemi.

I think there are two blue chippers then a bunch of guys who have some minor warts. Tkachuk probably has the highest floor among that next tier but I think there's a real chance that he doesn't have the offensive game to be a top 6 forward in the NHL. He's a sure-fire 3rd liner though. Zadina looks like he could be a Pastrnak type of player but I have my doubts that he'll be able to create enough space for himself in the NHL. Those are two examples that my team is like 95% sure to draft one of unfortunately. All of the 3-10 picks have similar hangups though.

Boqvist and HUghes could be Karlsson-esque players or they could be easily be Pierre-Marc Bouchard type players.

Wahlstrom looks like a Boeser type sniper but plays a bit too much on the perimeter.

Bouchard looks great but foot speed is a real concern. Same goes for Kotkaniemi.

Dobson is a nice player but might not ever develop offensively at the pro level.


After that I think it's actually got some players who will go later in the 1st round who I think could be stars:

Kupari
Ty Smith
Bokk

could all be 1st line players, IMO.

I think it's a average to slight above average 1st round after the top 10.
