What defines a close game: Opinions?

So I just started working on something today and didn't realize the magnitude of said project until I set my mind to it. I would like some help on said parameters.

I am trying to see who the is the best coach during tight games. Since there are 130 coaches that need to be a number which can be calculated as quickly as possible. So what number defines a close game: anything that is single digits, a touchdown or less, a field goal game? I am also going to try and calculate these stats against top 25 teams separated into 2 categories: midseason top 25, end of season top 25. Unfortunately, the final result top 25 will only be applicable back to 2002, but a 15-year stretch is a clear picture.

So what defines a close game to you: single digits, a touchdown, or a field goal?

I voted 3 or less. 3 Is perfect because then you have to consider do you take the FG to tie, or go for the win. Do you have the balls to try a play with 7 seconds left to win???

It depends. I put 9 or less because if another team scores a TD at the very end, that doesn't mean it wasn't a close game.

It's technically possible to win a game in OT by 8.

So to me it's more about how much time is left in the game before it's decided and you have little idea who is going to win.

I completely agree with the depending on time issue. My major issue is unless a buncha people help me crunch numbers and look at each game individually and judge i gotta go off of point value when the clock strike 0.

Yeah, a close game is one in which the other team can still at least tie at the last possible second. 9 is right out, but 8 is the answer.

8 or less for me, if you can tie in one possession, then its close, so thats 8 points

Back in the 70s every game the Rams lost was close and every win was dominant, at least according to So Cal news.
