depends…i've see 17 points score in in 3 minutes.

redefine your perimeters please OP.
I can't set parameters like that because at a glance that appears as a blowout. Unfortunately I don't have time to watch 10,000 games to see each individual scenario.

I can't. The problem with making a poll for this also lies within the same issue as deciding where the cutoff point is. It is so freaking subjective.
I got that when you said you couldn't change 9 to 8, I was just trying to be an ass.

That's irrelevant. Final scores can be deceiving, as far as how the game actually played out. If you didn't watch a game, or at least take the time to give it more than a glance, you don't need to worry if it was a really a close game or not.

What 2 people see as a close game is subjective the only unsubjective thing is pure statistical data. How one percieves that data is also subjective.

It depends. We've all seen games decided by a field goal where the outcome wasn't in doubt and two score games where it wasn't over until the horn sounded.

It's all about the excitement late. If you have one team burning clock late and the other is hoping for a miracle it's pretty much over. If no one knows the outcome it is a barnburner.

So I just started working on something today and didn't realize the magnitude of said project until I set my mind to it. I would like some help on said parameters.

I am trying to see who the is the best coach during tight games. Since there are 130 coaches that need to be a number which can be calculated as quickly as possible. So what number defines a close game: anything that is single digits, a touchdown or less, a field goal game? I am also going to try and calculate these stats against top 25 teams separated into 2 categories: midseason top 25, end of season top 25. Unfortunately, the final result top 25 will only be applicable back to 2002, but a 15-year stretch is a clear picture.

So what defines a close game to you: single digits, a touchdown, or a field goal?

Tough call to put a number on it. I have seen 7 point games where there was never any real doubt. I voted 7 but would have to agree that 8 is a one possession game ... i would have voted for 8.

This is a great topic.

Then may I say that the federal government should every week take the points from the winning teams and redistribute them so that there are no blowouts, by any definition. It's only fair. I could call out a poster if it helps make the list.

There's more objective data than just the final score that should go into how you subjectively perceive the game.

7 or less imo.

Unless it's Michigan and even if they need 3 int's to do it including one at the end of the game. I learned this is considered an ass beating last season.

IMO one possession defines it so that would rule out 9 pts in my mind.

Was going to boycot because potato salad wasn't an option, but I think this is a great question.
I voted 3 or less. 3 Is perfect because then you have to consider do you take the FG to tie, or go for the win. Do you have the balls to try a play with 7 seconds left to win???

^^^^^^^ Went with the 3 and under as I tend to agree with this rationale in general.

Sooo... the NEXT question (or poll), on the flip side, is what REALLY constitutes a ROUT??? :heh:

A route? A starting point, an ending point, and a way from one to the other.
