World Cup Qualifying in Columbus:
2001: USA 2, Mexico 0
2005: USA 2, Mexico 0
2009: USA 2, Mexico 0
See the trend? After the 2011 Gold Cup everyone was claiming Mexican dominance for years to come. Now if they lose tonight their best case scenario will likely be a playoff against New Zealand to qualify, assuming they can get past Panama at Azteca, which is no guarantee.
Will be sweet to qualify tonight by beating Mexico. They can watch us celebrate while wondering if they can get past Panama and New Zealand.
And look at this scenario:
Assume Panama loses at Honduras and USA beats Mexico.
Assume Panama does what every other team in the region has done and gets a point at Azteca. They go into the last game 1 point behind Mexico.
Last game - Mexico at Costa Rica, best case a point for El Tri. Puts them 2 up on Panama.
Last game - USA at Panama, Mexico needs help from the USA to keep their WC dream alive. The US can eliminate their rival by losing a meaningless game and laugh all the way to Brazil.
