You can't be serious! When Nehlen started at WVU, he stated most of WVU's players were MAC level. Cignetti played with the group he inherited from Bowden... against much tougher competition.

Funny how someone like yourself tries to piss on WVU's past. Cignetti was no longer playing against a schedule full of Southern Conference opponents.

Please stop with your BS...

Since guys like DAD seem to forget the past...

WVUToday Archive

Current WVU assistant coach Dave Johnson, a freshman tight end in 1979, recalled the makeshift team meeting room the tight ends and tackles had to use. It was right underneath the bleachers.

“You could see the framework of the old stadium and there was dirt on the floor,” said Johnson. “They just pulled an extension cord out there so they could plug a film projector in.”

Talley can recall absorbing some beatings as a 200-pound freshman defensive end before his personal epiphany came during a 31-6 loss at Penn State. He remembered getting hit so hard by fullback Matt Suhey on a sweep that he was chasing the ball carrier down the field without his helmet.

“I remember going back to the huddle and looking at (linebacker) Dennis Fowlkes and he said, ‘We ain’t ever letting anyone beat us up like that again,’” said Talley.

“There were a lot of guys forced into playing that weren’t ready to play,” added Dawson.

Youth Movement

By the time of the Pitt game, Cignetti had made the choice to play younger players – even if that meant it was going to benefit the next coach. Only two seniors were in the starting lineup for the Mountaineers against the Panthers: offensive guard Jim Himic and free safety Jerry Holmes.

True freshman tight end Mark Raugh was forced to step in for Rich Duggan, who was out for the year with a broken cheek bone. There were four sophomores in the starting lineup on offense, including Luck and split end Darrell “Coast to Coast” Miller. And the defense was even younger. Four freshmen were starting, including 204-pound nose guard Dave Oblak.

More history for all of you dumb fucks...

West Virginia University Mountaineers

As West Virginia University’s head football coach from 1976-79, Frank Cignetti didn’t have good facilities. He didn’t inherit an abundance of good football players. He didn’t have overwhelming support from the fans and the boosters. And he didn’t have his health.

“The two years that I played for Frank Cignetti in 1978 and 1979, I’m not sure that was the Frank Cignetti who had a good career with Bobby before and obviously went on to have great success at IUP,” said Luck. “He was sick. The poor guy was suffering from cancer.”

“We were coming,” Cignetti’s former strength and conditioning coach Dave Van Halanger told me a few years ago. “Man, we had that stadium coming, we had a bunch of good young players and we had a bunch of great coaches. Nick Saban was on his staff. It was about to happen.”

Damn, Martin should have extended him and given him a fat raise after that promising 1978 season, success has nothing to do with your coaching ability, it is all about how fancy your weight room is and how long your contract is!!!

How many great players came? Those coaches lost a ton of recruits to neighboring schools. Can't you read?

No one wanted the players WVU ended up with. My God... you can't be serious...

Yeah... logic like yours is why we lost Bobby Bowden after fans hung him effigy following a 4-7 season.

You have to be trolling. No one can be this fucking clueless.

Really, WHO'S the troll????? Did you read the names that were quoted in the articles you posted? You might want to compare those names to the stat sheets from Nehlen's first few seasons before you say they had no talent. CLEARLY Cignetti only needed a five year contract and a bar in the weight room to have been mentioned in the same breath as Bear Bryant...........

Yeah... tell me who was after Luck that we beat out? Who was after an undersized Talley that we beat out? Who was trying to recruit Mark Raugh that we beat out? Dave Oblak... Calvin Turner... who did we beat out for those two?

You are cracking me up. Troll harder DAD...

Too funny!!

EXACTLY, Cignetti saw raw talent, but couldn't transfer it to wins on the field, Nehlen could. You are just too funny, you pour piss on EVERYTHING to do with the past at WVU, but suddenly decide to take up a torch for Cignetti?????/ Even claiming that the schedule was tougher for him than for Bowden or Nehlen.......WOW

Couldn't beat teams loaded with NFL talent with a bunch of true... undersized freshmen.

You're trolling....

EVERY word was correct.....get a clue.

Really?

"Holgorsen hasn’t performed well since his first season with the old gold and blue." Outside of the 4 win season, he averaged 7+ wins/year. That is performing well. He won the Cactus Bowl.

"In the end, Holgorsen is more than likely not willing to accept a buyout being placed in his contract." Proven not to be true... not even close to being true.

"The fans should not settle for mediocrity which is exactly what Holgorsen has made WVU football." This absolute bullshit. WVU was not mediocre. He had WVU on the precipice of being a top 25 ball club. He simply was tasked to face the most daunting schedule for three straight years unlike anything in the history of WVU football.

Cherry pick much??? He averages 7 wins a year, period. That is NOT performing well

He was forced into it......who else was going to give him a shot? Holgorsen thought he was maybe going to be fired and did not want to risk his free $ if he was....

We were coming off an underperforming season when this was written, hardly BS, it will be interesting to see where WVU football is in a few years.

"When former AD Oliver Luck gave Holgorsen his contract he essentially handcuffed WVU. While Luck might have thought it was the right decision at the time it has seriously impacted the way Lyons can operate. With Holgorsen having no buyout why would he accept a new one where he can be fired for less money?"

Luck did not handcuff WVU, nor did he seriously impact the way Lyons could operate. After the '15 season, Lyons was certainly in good position to make one of two choices. Extend the HC with a new contract, or fire him. WVU has the resources now to pay off what was left of Dana's and his assistants contracts. WVU is making big boy money, it had an opportunity to act like one of the big boy schools.

Averaging 7 wins a season is not performing well? Hmm... how many wins did Coach Nehlen average per year?

Dana could have gone to a handful of different schools after last season's success. Troll harder...

The '15 season was anything but underperforming. WVU faced 4 top 20 opponents in a row that year... two of which finished in the top 10... one of which played in the CFP. Narrowly lost in OT to one of these teams at home... the only game of the four not played on the road. The '15 season was capped by beating ASU in essentially a road game, and saw its QB set bowl records to finish the season with 8 wins.

All accomplished with first time starters at key positions on offense... all accomplished after suffering key season ending injuries to players like Joseph, and the loss of OL starters Pankey and Cajuste for the KSU game.

Man I'm starting to believe you are a troll as I said earlier Baseball could be no better in Morgantown.

At the midpoint of its 54-game schedule, the West Virginia baseball team sits No. 9 in the RPI.

Gold & Blue Lunch: Baseball sports top-10 RPI

Mediocre baseball coach, man you just can't make this shit up........

Mediocre baseball coach just defeated the #2 or #3 team (depending on poll used) tonight before almost 3,000 fans at the new stadium DAD didn't want built. 4th largest crowd... EVER!!

First ever nationally televised game in front of a standing room only crowd.

Luck had a plan...

What is Lyons plan again?
