I think Starkel will end up getting the start

That is going to be ugly. Freshmen QB with probably the worst WR Corp of Sumlin's tenure. The OL is a dominant group. The kid may end up being a good QB, but that is a lot of pressure to put on a QB. I can't believe Sumlin didn't pull out all the stops to get Stidham to transfer in. It might cost his job

Stidham is right where God intended him to be.

I meant not a dominant OL. Basically I don't see another group on Offense that will take pressure off the QB spot and that is rough on any QB, especially a freshman

Ohio State "sold out the stadium" at $5/ticket although there is renovation going on so it's only 82K this year. It's on the BTN live (lol at competitors who will be on tape delay). It's supposed to rain so the crowd may not be quite that large.

All of the money goes to local charities.

I'm confident Fickell will get us back to where we were 5-6 years ago. Lots of questions about the roster though. Pretty much every position is up for grabs. Hopefully they'll post full highlights soon.

Two things stood out as the Black team beat the Red 22-6 in the annual University of Cincinnati spring football game at Nippert Stadium on Friday night. First, the defense clearly is ahead of the offense right now. Second, the fans are back. After a 4-8 season and growing discontent with then-coach Tommy Tuberville, a crowd estimated at 7,000-plus attended Friday on a warm spring night. Many observers could not recall UC having a larger crowd for a spring game.

“It lets you know that even though we did have a bad season last year, we still have a lot of fans that believe in us and that believe in coach (Luke) Fickell and what he’s doing,” said junior cornerback Alex Thomas, who had two interceptions for the Black team.

First-year UC coach Fickell praised the fans for their attendance and also noted his defense looked strong on both sides. “We can be pretty good on defense,” Fickell said. “I know we can. It all starts up front.” UC played without its top returning defensive lineman, junior defensive tackle Cortez Broughton, who is out with a foot injury but should be ready for the 2017 season. Yet, Bearcats defenders put steady pressure on the quarterbacks, recorded multiple sacks and interceptions. Thomas said UC is playing with a new urgency under Fickell.

“It’s way, way different,” Thomas said. “If you don’t have the energy you’ve got to get the energy.” “Even without Cortez tonight, there’s eight or nine guys up front that can play,” Fickell said. “If we can find a way to have those guys play relentless football and they only have to play 40 snaps a game, I think we can probably create a lot of havoc.”

Senior middle linebacker Jaylyin Minor had nine tackles, a sack and a pass defense. Senior cornerback Davin Pierce had eight tackles, as did junior nickelback Tyrell Gilbert (Princeton High School). Freshman defensive tackle Curtis Brooks and senior defensive end Lyndon Johnson each had two sacks, and junior defensive end Kimoni Fitz had one sack. Fickell said his review of the Bearcats’ 2016 game films showed that the Bearcats missed an average of 11 to 12 tackles per game.

“The biggest glaring thing to me is, they tackle a hell of a lot better,” Fickell said. “If we can be a great tackling football team, we’ve got an opportunity to be really good.”

OFFENSIVE LOOK: Junior Hayden Moore, who emerged as the No. 1 quarterback in spring ball, had an off-night. Moore was 13-for-32 passing for 156 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions for the Red team. Backup quarterback Ross Trail, a sophomore who led the Black team, was 15-for-30 for 186 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Trail also scored on a 35-yard run. Trail was asked afterward about the quarterback battle with Moore.

“I just can’t get wrapped up in that,” Trail said. “If I play my game and do as well as I can, everything will take care of itself.”

No. 3 quarterback Jake Sopko, a redshirt freshman, took his turn after Moore for the Red team. Sopko was 8-for-14 for 109 yards, with one touchdown pass and two interceptions. Sopko’s TD pass was an 11-yarder to junior wide receiver JJ Pinckney, a converted defensive back. Stat leaders Friday also included redshirt freshman running back Jerrid Doaks, who had 15 carries for 61 yards for the Black team. Doaks also had four receptions for 26 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Rashad Medaris was the big-play man for the Red team, with three catches for 102 yards. Senior running back Mike Boone had only one carry for 1 yard for the Red team, but he did catch four passes for 25 yards. Fickell is easing Boone back into action, with Boone’s 2016 season ending after nine games because of a turf toe injury.

“We put (the quarterbacks) in some tougher situations,” Fickell said. “Hayden had an offense where Mike Boone is in there but hey, there’s a stipulation that Mike’s not allowed to run the football. I think it took about half a series for the defensive guys to figure out that when Mike’s in there, there are no running plays. It puts you in a little bit tougher position.

“But, I was happy to see Ross go out there, not just the way he threw the ball but the way he commanded himself, the way he led and took charge. I was really happy to see that.”

Did Trail make the competition closer Friday?

“He’s a competitor, and I think that’s what you really ultimately want to go out here and see,” Fickell said. “Hayden missed a lot of the winter with the workouts because he had a groin issue. It makes it a little harder, not because he doesn’t know how to play the football game but just to get back in and get the feel. He’s played really well all through spring. His ability to lead and get those guys to follow him is what he’s continued to build upon.”

ON DECK:
Also looming in the quarterback race is Ohio State transfer Torrance Gibson, a former five-star recruit and high school quarterback who was moved to wide receiver at OSU. Gibson has enrolled at Cincinnati State CC to get an associate’s degree. If that happens, Gibson could join UC in June and get a shot at QB this season.

GET YOUR KICKS: Offensively, senior kicker Josh Pasley provided most of the scoring. Pasley went 5-for-5 on field goals for the Black team, and got a big ovation when he nailed a 52-yarder to end the first half.

The left-footed Pasley was the primary UC kicker in 2016, as regular kicker Andrew Gantz missed most of the year with a leg injury. With senior Gantz still working his way back into shape for 2017, does Pasley think he could work his way into the starting job?

“I think it’s still his,” Pasley said of Gantz. “He’s done so much since he’s been here. I’ll just keep working hard and go from there.”

Gantz, as the Red team kicker, did not get a chance to kick Friday. As it was, Fickell said that if Gantz had played, he would not have attempted anything over 25 yards.

“All this does is create greater competition,” Fickell said. “It makes guys work in practice. It at least gives us options and at least gives us some things for guys to continue to push each other. We’re going to put the best player out there. We owe that to every guy on this team.”

I went for a half of Michigan's today but with two little kids and 80 degree temps, we didn't last long. Grabbing a cold beer to sit at home and watch the game now in full while everyone else in my household naps.

GriEER looked great, as good as advertised. IMO he will be in the Heisman hunt and wont be here next year so we better enjoy him.

WR group looked good but we still have to figure out the starting group. I think we are going to look a lot like the Texas A&M offense when they were solid a few years ago with this combo of big WR's with long arms and small scat WR's with Spavital calling plays.

We stole a gem out from under Dantonio and Harbaughs nose with RB Martell Pettaway (kids from Michigan), guy was impressive last year as a true frosh, he is transitioning to a beast of a D1 player now. Our new jitterbug from Louisiana is fun to watch too. We have the best RB unit in the conference in 2017.

Line looked pretty good all n all.

Defense looked decent though Gibson is still playing with the lineups a bit. They will be better than I thought by fall imo, I wasn't expecting a stellar unit but I feel better now. Gotta avoid injuries and stupidity through fall camp but if we do I think we will be pretty good again.

We prob gonna need a new QB next year so if ya want to send another one our way...
