and I find this on wikipedia....The Oklahoma Sooners have been a dominant program in every conference they have participated in, from the Southwest Conference to the Big 12 Conference. The team has captured 44 conference titles, including 14 in a row between 1946 and 1959, and 7 claimed national championships: 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, 2000. In addition, the NCAA recognizes 10 additional national titles for Oklahoma in the 1915, 1949, 1953, 1957, 1967, 1973, 1978, 1980, 1986 and 2003 seasons, for a total of 17 national titles in football

How the fuck does the NCAA recognize OU as a national champion in 2003 yet they lost LSU.

For a storied college they haven't made much noise lately in regards to football, wonder what the future holds for this college.

The NCAA doesn't recognize national champions directly, but they do recognize national championships that get awarded in that they list some of them.

I do not know where all these new polls being counted suddenly came from. I do not remember any such polls counting before as a national title award with the NCAA.

The general formula for claiming national titles should based on the years and era IMO.

Here are the eras:

Pre-1936 - Math era. No polls existed, so only math formulas are used to award titles. You'll get many claims in this era because of multiple polls.

1936-1950 AP Poll/Math era. The AP Poll first starts in 1936, so you have a mixture of claims on math and the AP polls. I wouldn't be apposed to this being the AP only era to be honest(or require a minimum # of formulas to agree to be included as the AP was a somewhat biased in the early years).

1951-1997 AP/Coaches era. With a 2nd human poll, it pretty much squeezes out the math formulas(which by todays standards were very simple since the math had to be done by humans).

1998 - 2014 BCS era. BCS Championships are really all that matters. AP Polls does it's own thing I guess, but I think most people are of the opinion they don't really count.

2015+ Playoffs.

That would be using the best methods available for the time period. I see most of the major schools generally sticking to this as well. A few minor exceptions here and there.

Man. if only I could think of a school that cherry picks national championships for the purposes of convenience and marketing ....

Alabama already follows what I posted and so do most schools.

Notre Dame has 1 small exception and that is that it doesn't count math polls once we hit the AP era. At that point, they only claim the AP and/or Coaches(post 1950). Which I agree with.

So, if you want to cry about Alabama's 1941 National Championship which is the only difference, be my guest.

If Notre Dame and Alabama use such similar criteria, how is it possible that both schools claim a National championship in 1973? If only there was a head-to-head opportunity to break that tie ...

Uh, because back in the day Bowl games were considered exhibition games. The AP didn't start doing polls after bowls until the 60's and the coaches poll in 1974.

So, grats on finally gaining the balls and winning because of something Alabama did on a routine play as our FG missed the XP on our last TD giving you a 1pt win. Because we all know Notre Dame lacks the balls to go for a win and would have been happy with a tie.

Speaking of ties, I don't see you complaining about that season too much. Or bringing up that your team wouldn't even play in a bowl game that year and risk it, while Alabama played in the sugar bowl and ripped #6 Nebraska a new one.

Come to think of it. I seem to remember another season where Alabama claims a title in a very similar fashion. What year was that? Let me see?

1978, I believe it was.
