The Buffalo Sabres trade Thomas Vanek to the NY Islanders

The Buffalo Sabres have traded Thomas Vanek. The trade information was first broken by Newsday Islanders beat reporter Arthur Staple on Twitter at 8:30pm Sunday night - Thomas Vanek has been traded by the Buffalo Sabres to the New York Islanders. The Sabres official Twitter page confirmed the news shortly after. The Sabres will receive in compensation forward Matt Moulson as well as the Islanders 1st round pick in 2014 and their 2nd round pick in 2015.

In his time on the Island, Moulson topped the thirty goal mark in each of his first three seasons. An injury shortened his 2012-2013 campaign limiting his production, but this year in eleven games Moulson already has six goals and three assists. In his 333 career games Moulson has totaled 124 goals and 109 assists and has a career -12 rating. Matt Moulson is also in the last year of his entry-level contract and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Like Moulson, newly named Captain Thomas Vanek, who will also become a restricted free agent when his contract expires after the 2013-2014 campaign ends, and also has 9 points so far this season. During his time in Buffalo the Austrian native played in 598 games totaling 254 goals, 243 assists, and acquired a +29 rating. The Sabres and Islanders do not meet again this season until March 15 on Long Island.

I just remembered, Stars and Lindy Ruff are in Buffalo tomorrow night - I'll be curious to see how much of this trade takes the PR spin off of Lindy coming back

Looks like a sweet deal for Buffalo. Just keep shittin' the bed for the rest of the year and you should have a good future in about 3 years.

I figured they'd find someone who'd be willing to part with a 1st for Vanek, but I didn't expect to get a player in return and a 2nd for him with the knowledge that he's probably going to Minnesota in the off-season.

I guess the fact that he's not just a deadline rental drove the price up a bit.

i think it was a wonderful trade for buffalo boss. they get rid of the salary if they want to make some more moves it gives them some flexability, it also gives them a 1st and 2nd round pick for the true rebuild. Vanek was ufa and most certainly gone at seasons end. I wonder if Reiger pushed him on Minny as that seems to be where hes destined to go (did Vanek have a NTC?)

So Isles get a guy that will walk in June and give up a guy who will walk in June and a first and a second. Oh and the Isle needed help on D and in goal and got a forward. Am I reading that right?

Early reports are discussing too that Moulson could become deadline bait too. Triple-30 goal seasons with 40+, 50+, and 60+ points (in that order) with a pace last year that would have been 70+ over a full season. A pretty appealing rental option for a contender at the deadline.

If they could send Moulson (assuming they can't re-sign him) and a 4th for a 2nd, they'd essentially have traded Vanek and a 4th for a 1st and two 2nds, which would be pretty solid.

Yeah you get a first and a second for a player your were going to loss at years end anyway. Thats a good deal for the Sabres.

Not so good deal for the Islanders especially if he bolts at years end.

Doob's evaluation...

Thomas Vanek
Goals per game: 0.43
Assists per game: 0.41
Points per game: 0.84
Salary: $6.4 million

Matt Moulson
Goals per game: 0.37
Assists per game: 0.33
Points per game: 0.70
Salary: $3.9 million

Seems like the Sabres got the better value there, plus the draft picks. Unless of course Matt Moulson was just a John Tavares creation, in which case the trade makes more sense for the Islanders.

If Moulson keeps scoring in Tavares's absence (big IF) he could get a 1st rounder at the deadline, IMO.

Makes one wonder what Mike Cammalleri could fetch for Calgary?

If he keeps up his play and given his playoff track record I would say a 1st and second-tier prospect (do the Flames accept anything other kind of prospect in trades :heh:). Or maybe a former 1st rounder and a 2nd round pick. :noidea:

I can see a team offering a lot for Squidy; he's been a beast in the postseason before.

I don't seem him keeping pace with Hodgson instead of Tavares. Hard to say though. If he's on pace for another 30/70 type season though, I would tend to agree.

The question is - Will the Sabres have a "greeting" for Vanek when he returns to First Niagara Center?

According to the ever-popular "source," the Sabres had offered to make Vanek the highest paid player in the league.

I am so glad that he was so intent on not being part of the re-build. He's a good hockey player and all, but I could make a pretty decent list of players that I think deserve to be paid more than Vanek.
