Phillies signed RHP A.J. Burnett to a one-year, $15 million contract.
The deal also includes performance bonuses, a $15 million mutual/player option (with a $1 million buyout) for 2015 and a limited no-trade clause. Most figured that Burnett would wind up back with the Pirates if he decided to continue playing, but the Phillies offered him a lot more money and he jumped at it. The veteran righty will settle in as a fine No. 3 starter behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee.

Are you really surprised? I'm happy. At least it is somehow limited.

Yes, I am surprised that the Phillies overpaid and still had to include a limited no-trade clause.

Being that nearly every non-minor league deal includes one, it really doesn't surprise me at all. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure that Hamels Rollins, Papelbon, Howard, Lee, and Ruiz all have some sort of trade clause.

Yes, comparing multi-year deals with a one year deal is retarded.

That's not my point. I never said that Burnett should get a no-trade clause. I said I'm not surprised by it. Any major league player who is a veteran and has been somewhat productive in their career will receive one from the Phillies, regardless of a one year deal or a multi-year deal. Just like nearly anybody will receive player bonuses in their contract from the Phillies. None of this is surprising.

Yeah, I think the scenario we talked about where the Phillies are out of it in July and Burnett is having a good season and a contending team calls and ask about him he would be stupid not to waive a no trade clausse in his situation. I guess he could try to make the Phillies pay him but it doesn't seem like he would have any leverage.

that's insane. Everything in that article pointed to a guy who would be willing to give a slight hometown discount and yet again they are giving a guy incentives based on just showing up for his turn in the rotation. I mean, he's a great addition in that he takes away some of the risk involved in counting on Roberto Hernandez and some other guys but that is way too much money for a guy who is only slightly better than Kyle Kendrick. Really the only player I've seen on this team that I'd even consider incentives based on being able to play is Utley. He has proven that as long as he can drag himself into the lineup he will bee one of the top 5 or 6 second basemen in the league. Other than that you're just opening yourself up to all lkinds of headaches.

30 starts isn't even a full season. They overpaid, by a lot, for a pitcher that will not be a deciding factor as to whether or not this team makes it to the postseason.

If this team was build better, I'd be fine with it.

If the guy is 50/50 on retirement, I don't get why you feel the need to throw a ton of fucking options at him. The good news is, one stint on the 15-day DL and he shouldn't be getting his bonuses. I would like to think he and Rollins will be managed well this year. Burnett will be harder because you can't really just not start starting pitchers if they're not hurt or pitching poorly, but there's no fucking reason that Rollins should get 500 plate appearances this year. He probably will, but he shouldn't. Give Galvis 400 plate appearances. Give Hernandez a turn at shortstop.

It may not matter because Rollins still does have a 5 million dollar player option, but at least we will be saving 6 million dollars and possibly have a chance at J-Roll looking to get paid better elsewhere. Regardless, it doesn't matter. His production will continue to worsen, he's going to get 500 plate appearances, and he's going to be back in 2015 making 11 million fucking dollars while Galvis, Hernandez, Crawford, and Quinn rot in the minors or sit on the bench with their dicks in their fucking hands.

Of course money matters. 16 million for one season isn't bad. Probably 33 million for two years is. It's not even like a 1 year contract with options. It's a two fucking year contract.

Rollins only needs 434 plate appearances for his option to kick in. And I am telling you now, that option is kicking in.

I was rounding up. I knew he had to get 1100 in 13-14 and that he got more than 600 last year so he needed around 500 this year. Technically though, even if he reaches 1100 from 13-14, but finishes 2014 on the disabled list, and didn't have 600 PA's in '14, the option doesn't vest. But don't worry though. There's still an 8 million dollar club option (which the Phillies will likely jump at) and a 5 million dollar player option.
So he will be back.

Speaking of awful contracts, what's this I'm hearing about 6 years 100 million for Homer Bailey? When did mediocre pitchers start getting 100 million dollars? Wouldn't their money be put to better use trying to lock up a younger and better pitcher in Mat Latos?

"and Rollins is not on disabled list at end of 2014 season (or if he is on the DL, a mutually agreed upon doctor deems him available for 2015 Opening Day roster)"

That option might as well have been a guaranteed year.

Put large sums of money in the hands of a retard and this is what you get. Burnett was reported to have stated that he seriously was considering retirement until you know who got a hold of him and he said in Pissburgh that the money was the deciding factor that changed his mind. Go figure!!
