Hell of a career. Big part of our 2010 run. Injuries are the only thing that kept him from the Hall.

He's done. The Phils just signed A.J.Burnett. More old guys.

Yeah I would have liked to sign Burnett. Good pickup.

Halladay's retirement left a bit of a hole. I'll wait see if Burnett is the guy to fill that void.

Getting Burnett is a great move. He threw 191 innings, 18 QSs, 3.30 ERA, 209K, 67 BB. He's older but he'll fit into the rotation with Lee, Kendrick, and Hamels. This takes the pressure off the team to find two reliable starters among Pettibone, Cloyd, and the unknown Gonzalez.

I believe the addition of Byrd and Burnett, along with the healthy return of the nine player-position months lost in 2013 (yes), the Phillies will make the playoffs. More hitting and better pitching. I'm an excitable boy and I'm calling it. Out with the frigging snow and let the games begin, damn it!

Yeah, if the report of Burnett for one year is true I like it a lot. It gives them a chance to be competitive this year until someone like Biddle is ready for the majors, maybe in 2015.

Behind Lee and Hamels, he makes for a very nice number three starter.

And the team will still be lucky to make it to .500

I'm glad it is a one year deal, but that is a hell of a way to waste $16 million.

No, it isn't a waste. I'm not going to be a jackass and say that this is like the greatest signing ever or anything, but it's pretty damn good considering we're in the second week of February. The Phillies have money to spend. It's not like they're going to go over their luxury tax. Hell, they still have about 16 more million to spend before they go over the 189 million dollar threshold. I'd rather have a 1 year 16 million dollar contract than a 2 year 22 million dollar one. Hamels says he'll be back before the end of April, but you know how these things go... who the hell knows when he will be back. This definitely adds some insurance.

And by the way, 191 IP 3.30 ERA 1.21 WHIP and a 107 ERA+ are pretty damn good numbers for a third starter.

read the story on espn a few hours ago. the crying and whining was fucking disgusting. as if this is the first day of free agency and amaro was just like "here's 16 million dude." the season starts in 6 weeks. you get the OK to add payroll and sign this guy for the year, or sit on the money and do nothing with it. what kind of fucking moron would insult amaro and/or complain about this?

this is the rare time money does not matter at all.. and of course, it's some of the most crying i've ever seen already. so bored with the old age jokes and overall philly attitude. so many ho/mo's need to just move to a different city and pick another team already.

Money always matters. They now have a payroll of $175 million and will be lucky to be above .500

They have spent $62 million this offseason. They should have passed on Burnett. Burnett was not the difference between making and not making the playoffs.

The only thing this off season has done was extend how long the Phillies will struggle.

Here's how the season is going to play out for the clownish fanbase:
They are going to get pissy when Hamels is out and/or returns and struggles a bit.
They are going to complain about Howard's production.
They are going to want Rollins benched.
They are going to suggest Sandberg should be fired and bring in a "real" manager.
Something, something, Amaro.
They will complain when Utley misses a month or more of games.
They will be upset when Byrd does not come anywhere close to last years production.
They will come up with ridiculous trade scenarios.
They will announce repeatedly they are "done with this team."

That is what this season will be.

Insurance for what? This team isn't competing for the playoffs this season.

Good, this is just what I need. I'm in deep with the sharks can I get the World Series winner and if you don't mind the scores to each of the games?
