People who root for a P5 team that neither you nor your children attended, how/why did you pick ?

Interesting question I saw brought up on another site.

I know my dad for a long time rooted for Notre Dame because of his Catholic upbringing.

No NFL team at the time, state funded school ... as in every taxpayer in the state of Washington is a booster for the University of Washington seeing how it's their tax dollars that go towards paying for it.

Take the tax money away, take the clothing sales away, have non alumni stop attending games and stop watching them on TV and let's see how that works.

I go to Washington, but I still cheer for Wisconsin. From there originally and cheered for them for as long as I can remember. It is impossible for me to drop a team

In my family. If you grow up in Oklahoma, your either a Sooner fan, or your placed in a basket and floated down river by your 2nd birthday. Not sure if I’m actually an only child, or just a case of being the one kid that made the right choice.

Just kidding.........

Kinda............

I have always really liked Kansas State. They remind me of old school VT back in the day - grind out yardage and be a royal PIA to teams. Plus can't go wrong with Snyder. Once he leaves K-state will go to shit.

But you're a VT fan first and foremost, correct?

Oh hell yea. I am a VT fan through and through. I went to the Tech during the MV7 years. Also went to Arky State (Red Wolves) for grad school as well. But I do try and record some of the K-State games when I can keep up.

You mentioned attended or family attended, but not living/grew up near. Proximity has to the most common reason. Supporting teams from your general region. That to me is really no different from supporting a local NFL team. Nearby, can attend games without travel, and a part of your community.

I mean that's not part of my story, but I know plenty of college fans who are caught up in teams near where they grew up.

As AG said, many of us are old enough to remember when UW football was more popular around Seattle than some pro teams were at the time. I would imagine the majority of fans at that time had no direct ties to the school itself. I grew up going to UW games and still preferred the college game even after the Seahawks were born. It's in my blood.

I did not attend Nebraska. No one in my family attended Nebraska. Not my Mom, not my Dad, not my brother, not my sister, not me, not my future wife, not my kids.

My father was Ohio State alum, but was born in Louisiana. My mother is an Arizona Alum and was born in Ohio.

My father was in the Air Force. Until the age of 5 I grew up in Italy and Germany, I had no clue what American Football was.

I moved to America to SAC headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. Learned about American Football. Nebraska was just starting the Devaney run. I loved the CONTACT of American football.

I was a Notre Dame fan from the age of 6 to the age of 9. They had a Notre Dame football TV show on Sunday's that I watched. My best friend and I were HUGE NFL fans.

My mother took me to my first Nebraska football game in 1969, Southern California at Nebraska.

Then Nebraska started to win, and win a lot. Then 1970 happened, then 1971. Then the Devanay years transitioned into the Osborne years.

Absolutely. I just copied and pasted the question, but it certainly could have been worded better. I like getting to know more background on the posters and stuff.

Born in Cleveland. Raised in Columbus from age 5 to present. My Grandma worked at OSU. I would have gone there but got a better scholarship offer from Ohio Northern.

Still bleed scarlet and gray. Go Bucks! Go Polar Bears!

Oh, and in a couple of years I will be going to OSU - - - I can take any class I want free since I am over age 60 now. As soon as schedule allows, it's back to hitting the books for me.
