Padres Acquire Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton Jr.
By Charlie Wilmoth [April 5, 2015 at 5:09pm CDT]
5:15pm: The Braves will acquire Maybin and Quentin, Rosenthal tweets. The Braves will also acquire pitcher Matt Wisler, as FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi tweets. McDaniel tweets that the Braves will also receive outfield prospect Jordan Paroubeck. Rosenthal tweets that the Braves will also receive the 41st pick in this June’s draft.

5:11pm: The Padres have acquired Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. (formerly known as B.J. Upton) from the Braves, Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs tweets.

5:09pm: The Padres have completed a trade, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. It’s not yet clear which players are involved. Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller tweets, however, that the trade could involve Cameron Maybin or fellow outfielder Carlos Quentin, which would make sense given the Padres’ roster construction.

what does upton mean though?? With Justin, Will myers and Kemp, upton is not even a starter, is he just going to be used as a pinch runner??

Guess he's a late inning defensive option for CF?

His D sucks

Worse than any of the rest of the options? Justin and Kemp aren't any better in LF or CF. Don't know that I can recall Myers D. Maybin could have been the best defender in CF of the group, but was not much more than that.

Yall are focusing far too much on Kimbrel. He was a great closer, but he was just a closer.

You should be focusing on how the Braves managed to dump BJ on someone and got their top ranked prospect out of it.

We had got rid of 45% of our strikeouts last season before this trade. Gotta be over 50% now with BJ gone.

I'm sure the goal was moreso just to dump salary and get rid of upton...Kimbrel's great, but closers rarely have long careers to begin with and adequate replacements often aren't too difficult to find, so my guess is that they were ok giving him up for little if they could also get rid of Upton and close to $30M in payroll.

To be fair though, he's the top prospect in a very mediocre farm system who's 22 and coming off a disappointing year in AAA. I wouldn't say the Braves the steal of the century or anything of the sort.

Are you kidding?

We lose a great closer, but get rid of the most hated sports figure in Atlanta AND we don't have to pay a dime of the remaining contract.

Getting rid of Melvin Upton Jr, the Pads eating all of his remaining contract and all we had to lose was a closer, and we get a very good prospect?

You're right, it's not robbery, it's downright r*pe.

I'm being realistic...it's a good deal for the Braves since their goal is to shed payroll, but I think you're really overrating Wisler. His 2014 performance was not even remotely good at all.

He also wasn't really their top prospect anymore.
