First time in nearly 600 years (!) that a pope resigned, citing his health.

Something is up. Pope John Paul II was pretty much senile at the end of his tenure. I smell a conspiracy.

He already survived the priests molesting little boys scandal and the Nazi Youth scandal.

Not sure what they could have on him bigger than that to bring him down.

Maybe he has picked out his ideal successor, & wants to be there to try & 'steer' the College of Cardinals in the desired direction. :2cents:

This.

Something will one day come out as to why he is being ousted. I know when he was elected he was said to be a transitional stop gap, but Popes don't resign. The last time was due to a major scandal/problem. I think something about the molestation stuff he handled is creeping back into the picture.

What he stands for is a conspiracy. :2cents:

I'm very curious as to what is inside some of the literature deep within the Vatican.

I've never understood the need for the political set up within the Catholic church. It's not biblical...so that's probably what bugs me. Also: it was definitely the right choice for him to do this...he's 85, it's a tough job, he can't do it. If the Vatican is mad it's because they can't manipulate the situation because of a senile leader.

I wonder if they decide to go with a young candidate, do a whole reworking of the Catholic Church. Wouldn't it make a ton of sense for them to pick a guy that is younger, charismatic and could inject new life into a dying religion and be the face of their cause for the next 30-40 years rather than trot out another white haired wrinkled face that will be gone in a decade?

It's primarily white haired wrinkled faces that select the next pope though.

The Catholic church is far too engrossed in man-made traditions and rituals to gain a young following. It's not just them either, I've been in many churches that refused to give up certain traditions (mostly involving music) and essentially died off as a result. I don't think churches should adapt to the point of abandoning their faith, but you need to "keep up" to do justice to those you minister to. There are biker churches, farming churches, prison ministries, etc. out there, and no where in the bible does it say you have to stick to these traditional settings.

I've actually heard that Dejan from the Post Gazette is looking into filling the post. He did declare Pittsburgh the new hockey mecca...
