This might be the dumbest idea in the history of sports.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. All that would need to happen is for some star player to suffer a serious injury during some pointless tournament for this idea to blow up in the NBA's face.

I do, however, hope that it gets legs enough that we get a quote from Popovich about it. I can only imagine what his response would be.

Pop would send his summer league team, and they'd place 4th.

I was just thinking of this. This is a terrible idea.

I wonder if you would get 1/2 a banner for the mid-season championship.:noidea:

I like the idea or the creativity... but the points against it are just IMO.

Maybe not creating separate schedule but adding importance to certain games... keep the 82 gm sch as is but the select few teams participating will gain pts from the game's decision.

Like Miami vs SA in November, will be a normal game as the W goes to the winner but say we call this game a Vegas Tourny game(whatever name/series given), the win goes normal for the regular season standings but since it was a VT game, the winner gets "pts" or a "w" in their bracket or group....

So by seasons end, the team with the most VT game pts declared the winner? there's kinks to work out, go by the point system or do an actual tourney... the latter would be hard without creating extra games.

UNLESS they do a pt system for this season, then the top 8 or whatever teams with pts play in the vegas tourney before the new season or during the following all star weekend? quick one game eliminations on neutral courts. like a march madness....

I'm for it if they can get the players to buy in. The regular season is so long and boring. Making a tourney to break up the season could be fun. Cut the regular season to 66 games and the tourney has to have a huge cash prize for the winning team. Another option is go the soccer route but instead of international teams make it local teams. Players play for their home state. Team New York vs team Florida etc. I don't know what u do with the international players though

Awful idea but at least they're looking at creative ways to shake things up. If they want to do a tournament, just steal the idea Bill Simmons has been pimping for years; top 14 playoff teams are locked at the end of the season, the remaining teams play a single elimination tournament to get the last 2 seeds. There's more to it but that's the jist of it

This would make sense if you make the season 120 games.

I know it says it here, but I don’t understand how it works. It sounds like everyone has to play, but some are single elimination and some players are going to be helping broadcast so therefore not playing or are they playing as well? They have the best teams and not the best teams, etc.

I hope the Lakers sit Lebron and AD for this and are out as quickly as possible.

Not a fan of this.

Based off what I read every team plays. Theres a group round basically a pool play. Then the 6 group winners advance to a quarters with 2 wild cards. Then they play out a title. And apparently all stats count except the championship lol.

Its the most made up randomly tossed together for no reason thing in sports.

But whatever, doesnt really impact much. Until some player tears his acl in the group round.

The regular season is garbage because they play too many games.

Unlike football where every game is important and fun...Easy fix imo

Is it really too hard to nationalize every team, eliminate every owner and the commissioner, and then make a 60 game nba schedule with players that care about winning for their local fans.

I don't see why people have an issue with this. Why not try something new?

Essentially, it's what, a max of eight games to win it? Why not? Makes things a little more interesting.

Although I do have to say, I hope they don't split the groups up by Conference. Just mix them all together and pick them at random.
