I'm not talking about the quality of the sequels, but whether or not they are needed for the story. For instance, Terminator only had 2 that were great. But the 3rd and 4th ones helped tell the story of 1st and 2nd, and ones they will make will do the same, even though they will never live up to it.

This is true.. I keep forgetting that that's what you originally intended. I saw the third Terminator movie, but have no memory of it at all. I'd have to revisit it to see if I felt it was a necessary installment in the storyline.

The Pirates of the Caribbean series coulda stopped before and I wouldn't have minded. They are reaching more and more
The script for the first one was adapted/blatantly ripped off an obscure video game so the rest of the movies were unnecessary by default.

I'm going to go with the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The European version of the first one was fine. The American one was also good but totally not needed and all of the sequels aren't needed at all. Its all one big cash cow on an author's materials after he passed away.

I liked the first three Hannibal Lecter movies and felt, if one wanted to know the story of the good doctor, Manhunter needed The Silence of the Lambs, which in turn needed Hannibal.. I never saw Hannibal Rising (which dealt with Lecter's youth) and didn't feel it was necessary to tell his story. Did anyone see that movie and do you feel I would get something out of seeing it? (I'll note I also liked Manhunter's remake Red Dragon.)

sometimes, actually many times Hollywood should leave well enough alone.

Space Jam 2 (with Lebron instead of Jordan)
Independence Day 2 (Will Smith turned it down)
Goonies 2
Beetlejuice 2
Blade Runner 2 (Harrison Ford is a go with it)
Top Gun 2 (not sure about Tom Cruise's involvement)

and of course National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2 (featuring Ed Helms as Rusty with Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo cameos)

I think for the most part most sequels are garbage.
A few exceptions in my book would be, in no particular order.
1) Back to the future 2/3
2) Terminator 2
3) Ghostbusters 2
4) Godfather 2
5) Aliens
6) Toy Story 2

Some of the worst:
1) Weekend at Bernies 2
2) Anchorman 2
3) Hangover 2
4) Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull
5) Godfather 3

I agree with the garbage category, but most sequels that were good/decent were done in a fairly short time frame from when the original came out, not 15+ years after the original as in the case of the movies I listed. Question being, is Hollywood that short on ideas for new movies where they have to go deep into the vault?

:agree:

I think that "Hollywood being short on ideas" is an epidemic and at an all time high. There is such a demand for movies now, because of cable and dish, that they just pump out crappy stuff and still make money. They have exhausted bad ideas and go back 10-15-20 years for even worse ideas and look to pick off some past big star that needs the money and attention now.

Every single one of those movies is a terrible idea, but will move to cable quickly and then the cable companies can tell you how many great movies they bring to you and charge you out the ass for them.

With the exception of #6, which I've seen neither of, a perfect list.

As for Hollywood running out of ideas I guess they forgot how to read.

Lots of good pulp out there dying for translation to the big screen.

And I'm not talking fucking comic books.....

Aliens is the greatest sequel of all-time.

Terminator 2 was better than the first.
