Alex Marvez of The Sporting News reports the Lions have become a "strong contender" for free agent RT Rick Wagner.

The Lions have a need at right tackle with Riley Reiff likely to leave in free agency. They've also been linked to former Panthers RT Mike Remmers. Wagner is considered the top tackle available in this year's free agent class and is already drawing considerable interest around the league. The Bears and Bills have both been mentioned as potential suitors.

Lions agreed to terms with RT Rick Wagner on a multi-year deal worth in excess of $9 million annually.

The Bears are apparently outbidding everyone by a mile for Mike Glennon, but they couldn't beat the Lions' offer to Wagner, who will replace Riley Reiff at right tackle in Detroit. 27-year-old Wagner was one of the NFL's premier pass-blocking right tackles last season and holds his own in the running game. Largely durable, Wagner has started at least 14 games in three straight seasons. The deal makes him the NFL's second-highest paid right tackle behind Lane Johnson, who is being paid as a future left tackle in Philadelphia.

When was the last time the Lions had a viable left and right tackle...?

That is an ass ton for a RT, but I like it. Now we need a RB and a LG and we could have one of the running games that I hear so much about.

Yeah, that seems pretty crazy price but I like where BQ's mind is at. Keeping Stafford clean should of always been the Lions priority.

Hopefully he goes ape shit in the draft on defense now.

NFL.com seems to have a much lesser opinion of Wagner then most other sites. They rank Reiff as the better tackle.

I want to see them roll the dice with Joe Dahl, but I doubt they do it.

Really solidifies the O-line. Even if we dont get a Guard I like what Dahl can do and he will get better. That makes LT and Lucas the backups.

Completely changes the draft strategy too. O-line is not strong in this draft. Ramcyzk surgery scares the crap out of me. All the rest had some weaknesses.

Might allow us to reach for LB Reddick in the first round. Lots of options now.

I am totally hoping for defense.
Let us get Adoree, the top pass rusher or best LB available.

I wouldn't be upset if they added a small school OT and convert him to guard in the later rounds.

Reiff is the better tackle, but at least the position got addressed.

Quinn has to get the Mayhew stench off the team.

PFF on Wagner:

"Few players have covered more of the grading spectrum than Ricky Wagner over the past three seasons, who has bounced from grades of 84.7 to 45.8, and back up to 84.5 again in consecutive years. At his best, Wagner has been a good pass protector and passable as a run blocker, which is a serviceable combination for most NFL teams. That said, teams will want to understand what happened in Wagner’s 2015 season before committing significant money."

I have seen enough of Reiff to know he is a liability against speed especially late in games when it counts. Maybe he played slightly better than Wagner the rest of the time, but I would take the latter if he can prove steadier in the clutch.
