  • Matthew Stafford was pretty good at throwing the deep ball in 2020. Jared Goff... not so much:
BB_72: no need for any WR that are good at running deep routes.

I would not be shocked if Lions sign Marcus Williams. He is young, very good, from the Saints.

He will cost a lot, but he is my best bet if the Lions sign a top player.

Maybe Romeo's brother, Julian, will take his place seems as though both were considered to be questionable at run defense. At least Julian doesn't cost as much as Romeo would once he gets his new contract ELSEWHERE.

Do you think they go with him or does Holmes pull the plug and go after LAR John Johnson lll. Maybe the familiarity with him ?

I really like Johnson but I wanted Marcus when he was drafted to be selected by us and still would be all for it.

As a Utes fan, I know which one I prefer.

I think Williams is less likely to have his current team attempt to keep them because they are in cap hell, I did not even think about the GM/Johnson ties.

or does Holmes shock everyone and drafts Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. The past draft tendencies read as a No.
Highly doubtful at No.7.
Just as much as I don't see the Lions getting out of the No.7 slot either.

I see no problem being a homer in this situation and should Walker not elevate his play this year then Marcus solidifies that role. Marcus is so much better than TW in both run and coverage, imo.

The draft being so unknown is kind of awesome. I am enjoying all of the speculations. The idea of Owusu-Koramoah was unthinkable before as Patricia would have had no idea how to use him. He would have plugged him in one spot used none of his versatility.

This right here is the lingering question. The unknown aspect of it.

Holmes wasn't picking players while at LAR so, maybe those prior tendencies get thrown out the window.

You couldn't be any more correct than this.

Allegedly the Safety position isn't valued all that much, according to the media types, and yet most defenses are in nickel 60% of the time or more, IDK. Seems like the Safety position is valued more now than 5-6 years ago. 3 Safety personnel is approximately 40% or more for most teams.

Lions DC Aaron Glenn: Players will be more important than scheme (usatoday.com)

New defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn made it clear in his first Lions press conference that things will be different in his defense. He’s an advocate for players over scheme and letting the talented players do what they do best.

“The No. 1 thing we’re going to do that we’re going to do as a staff, we’re going to make sure that it’s not scheme then players,” Glenn said last week. “It’s players and making sure we fit them to a scheme. And that’s our No. 1 goal, that you put the players in position to be successful.”

Glenn refused to commit to a base front this early, preferring to see what his players can do best instead.

BB_72: a welcomed change. Build a scheme around the players. Who would have ever come up with that idea.

Lions DC Aaron Glenn: Players will be more important than scheme (usatoday.com)

Glenn has roots in the same basic defensive scheme as Patricia, which leans heavily upon the Bill Parcells concepts from the 1980s and 1990s. Glenn played cornerback under Parcells with the New York Jets.

But Glenn has also played under Dom Capers, who is now on the Lions coaching staff as a senior assistant. Capers is all about the zone blitz and pressuring the quarterback, creating opportunities for takeaways. That’s more of what the defense was like in New Orleans, where Glenn has spent the last several seasons on the defensive staff. The base alignment might be the same, but the execution and fundamental principle of the defense is vastly divergent.

BB_72: Updated yesterday from PFF. I hope he doesn't stay if he gets the tag. It'd be a waste of money at this time.

4. WR KENNY GOLLADAY

Prediction: Detroit Lionsfranchise tag ($15.8 million for 2021)

Kenny Golladay the franchise-tag candidate has recently emerged as a product of the NFL rumor mill. And this would be a wise move for the Lions, given that the only wide receivers they would otherwise have on the roster for 2021 are Geronimo Allison, Quintez Cephus, Victor Bolden and Tom Kennedy.

Before his injury-riddled 2020 campaign, Golladay established himself as one of the best deep threats and contested-catch specialists in the entire league. In 2018 and 2019 combined, Golladay racked up the third-most deep (20-plus yard target) receiving yards, with 930, and he tied for first in contested catches with 43.

Golladay would receive a lot of interest on the open market. The Lions, with their lack of receiving prowess and a brand-new quarterback under center, should do everything they can to secure his services for the 2021 season.

15. S MARCUS WILLIAMS

Prediction: Las Vegas Raidersfour years, $57 million ($30 million guaranteed)

BB_72: This appears quite high priced for this years Cap due to the reduction. The SpoTrac seems a little under valued.

I wouldn't be opposed to Hill as a two year stop gap replacement if Coleman gets shown the door. He's 30 though.

42. CB TROY HILL

Prediction: Los Angeles Ramstwo years, $10.5 million ($7.25 million guaranteed)

The Rams have virtually no cap flexibility — they're roughly $27 million over the limit — and two of their marquee defensive backs are set to hit the open market in safety John Johnson III and cornerback Troy Hill. The bad news is that Johnson will fetch around $13 million per year on his next contract, putting Los Angeles out of the running. The good news is that Hill will be cheap enough for the Rams to retain him if they are able to open up just a little bit of cap space.

Hill has emerged as one of the best slot corners in the NFL over the past few seasons. An increased role has resulted in the best slot coverage grade in the league since 2019. Despite projecting to receive such a cheap deal (mostly due to the league still undervaluing slot corners), Hill was Los Angeles' fifth-most valuable non-quarterback in 2020 and the NFL’s 36th-most valuable defensive player, per PFF WAR.

^^^^^^^

That's one helluva crappy, worthless defensive roster

I'M not so sure cutting D. Shelton this year is a wise decision due to the inexperience that Penisini and Atkins have.

17 players whose contracts naturally expire in new league year 2022. That number doesn't include possible out by release.

I think the best bet is to let bigger contracts walk, let as many young unproven people fight it out, and see if you find a few diamonds
