I missed this about Tobe Hooper as well. I admired the hell outta the guy, especially for his Poltergeist.

May seem tame nowadays and this gif doesn't do it justice...but I freakin' loved this scene:

Tobe Hoppers was admitably a bit hit and miss but he had some classics.

Another Master gone. Sad times.

Anyone see The Toolbox Murders? An underrated movie and worth a watch.

What I loved most about Hooper was how he was never afraid to break the moral/societal boundaries. Coined as "transgressive horror" by Nick Zedd, and Tobe Hooper was one of the best in that regard. His movies were designed to be offensive & shocking. The impact he had on the horror genre was immense.

thatkevinsmith - ‪RIP #TobeHooper, brilliant director of #TheTexasChainsawMassacre - one of the most successful independent films of all time. I met this icon once, years ago at the old Dave's Laser on Ventura in the Valley. I was able to tell him how important he was to me and indie cinema in general and how much I LOVE TexasChainsawMassacre2 - (a movie that me and @TellEmSteveDave and #VincentPereira still quote at each other to this day). Not only did the man terrify me with #SalemsLot and #Poltergeist in my youth, his DIY moxie to make movies at all inspired me as a 23 year old who wanted to make Clerks. While my first film wasn't a horror movie (I wouldn't make my first horror flick until #JerseyGirl), I was terrified nonetheless about spending 27 grand on credit cards when I was dirt poor. But Tobe's work made the prospect of making a movie with no money when I'd never done something like that before less scary. He proved you didn't need lots of money or studio backing to make a flick - so to me, Tobe will always be one of the best filmmakers who ever lived. He entertained me long before I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker and he inspired me and kept me going when I was first learning to tell my stories cinematically. Thanks for that, Mister Hooper - and thanks for being so gracious and patient when I rightly gushed at you that day. You changed the world, storyteller, and your name and ideas will always be a part of my DNA. Because sex? Well nobody knows what sex is. But the saw is family! #KevinSmith #TobeHooper#Director #filmmaker #indiefilm #horror

Two times I teared up when celebrities have passed. Wes Craven and now Tobe Hooper. Both died around the same time, different years, obviously.

RIP to two of the greatest in the genre.

Saw The House on Willow Street the other day.

A decent little horror movie about a group of desperate criminals who kidnap a young lady only to have their plans collapse when things are not what they seem. When it started I thought we were going into a home invasion flick, but instead we got something completely different.

Good special effects and a solid premise are undercut by poor execution (possibly because of time constraints? They shove too much story in too quickly and it comes off forced), and hit and miss acting (some were decent, others not so much). Some good gore, excellent Gene Simmons style tongue actions. Chains rattle, people levitate, creepy people appear suddenly in flickering lights.

Overall, I'd give it a 5.5ish. Not bad but a bit of a missed opportunity. A bit better direction and keeping the storyline in check could have gone a long way.
