When you own a team you can enforce that your way

And there's a lot of examples of retired jerseys for players who didn't play that long for a team. Clyde Drexler and the Rockets, Shaq and the Heat, Charles Barkley and the Suns, Wilt Chamberlain and the Sixers, and others.

For those saying this is dumb:

Please find another player in the history of the NBA with 2 Finals MVPs in 1 city who doesn’t have his number retired there.

I get he was there 3 years and the team was really good without him. But if the Warriors want to retire his number, he earned it.

So did Klay, Curry, Draymond and Iggy.

Who I suspect will all get their due in time.
for all of you saying this is not dumb, find me a player that only played 3 years somewhere with his number retired.

It's the millennial way.

Everyone deserves a trophy so they don't feel left out.

I'm a millenial (barely) and I think it's stupid. I always thought of Jersey retirees were guys who spent 10-15 years with a franchise and had an extreme positive impact on the team.

#21 isn't retired by the Timberwolves because Kevin Garnett and Glen Taylor can't get along and it's just absurd.

I mean, that would be the common sense notion of having a number retired.

The fans didnt even embrace Durant, he spent most of his time arguing with fans on burner accounts anyway. LOL

5 guys.

You act like it is unprecedented. It isn’t.

The only player on that list of 5 who accomplished anything close to what Durant did is Wilt. And he won 0 rings with Philly.

Also worth considering:

Of the players that do have 2 Finals MVPs in 1 city, how many of them signed a 3-year contract with a team that had reached the finals in the two seasons prior (including a Finals win), and then bolted as soon as the contract was up?

I don't know fuckall about basketball, but I'm gonna guess the answer to that is zero point zero.

Drexler spent 3.5 years in Houston. And they retired his number. He sucked though. Only 1 ring that he stole & the last NBAer selected for the original Dream Team.

If KD had even been there 4 or 5 years with the same number of finals trips, titles and MVP's and the Warriors said they were going to retire his number...no one would bat an eye.

If grandma had balls, she'd be grandpa, and you'd be giving him a handjob.

Durant didn’t do that either.

He signed 3 consecutive 1 year deals.

I didn't "retire #35" from this:

"As long as I am Co-Chairman of this team, no player will ever wear #35 for the Warriors again."

Julius Irving 3 years for the Nets.
Oscar Robertson played for the Bucks for 3.5 seasons.
Drexler played for the Rockets for 3.5 seasons.
Bill Walton 3.5 seasons for the Blazers.

Maybe 3.5 seasons is where people usually draw the line.

He was also a star at University of Houston, so that factored in

Ahhh, so he kept signing one year deals until it looked like the going was going to get a little rough and then he bailed. What a bitch.

Fuck him.

Also, Nate Thurmond and the Cavaliers. Jersey retired after only playing 2 seasons for the Cavs.

There are several. The difference is that typically they came to a shitty team and turned it around in their time there. Durant went to a championship team.
