The real reason they are retiring his number is they are thankful he didn't go to the Lakers to team with Davis, LeBron and potentially Leonard, and decided to head to the Eastern conference.

Speaking of Thurmond, what does he have in common with Seth Curry and LeBron James?

Hey my bad on comment # 18. I thought it said Steph & not Seth.

Shaq was in Miami for 4 years, won one title, no MVPs and got his jersey retired from the Heat
There is a difference. Shaq brought the Heat a plus 17 win total and an NBA Championship.

So....

You are penalizing Durant because the Warriors were still really good without him?

He would probably have 3 Finals MVPs right now if he had not gotten hurt.

As good as Shaq was, he was not even the best player on those Heat teams. He will even tell you that himself. KD was always the best player on the Warriors. Maybe the best player in the entire league.

They are retiring his number because he got hurt and that’s just the touchy feely thing to do in this soft world we live in now days. 3 years does not warrant having your number retired, period.

Longevity is definitely something to consider, but context of accomplishment is the main point here.

As many around here have pointed out numerous times through different slander methods, the Warriors don't win the Championships without KD. Entirely possible. KD got two finals MVPs and brought us two championships in 3 years and likely 3 in 3 if he doesn't get hurt.

Monta Ellis ain't getting his jersey retired even though he played more years. KD deserves if for what he helped the Warriors to accomplish. They're not a dynasty without him. TBH, 35, 23, 11, 9 and 30 should all be in the rafters one day.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking - though I think they’re feeling guilty / afraid of the possible consequences of pressuring Durant to play when he wasn’t ready. Just look - they traded Iguodala after he criticized the medical staff.

I asked this question earlier.

Please name 1 player in NBA history to win 2 Finals MVPs in the same city that does not have their number retired.

Until someone can find an answer to that, there is simply no reason to say KD did not earn this on the court.

Does Lebron have his jersey retired? I don't think Wade even has his retired...yet. I was just wondering in comparison to this. @bksballer89

Lebron doesn't yet. I'm sure he will eventually but I don't think he does right now...usually they retire numbers at the end of the players' career, right? That's why I thought this was unusual

Lebron jersey will be retired from everything Pat said but nothing yet for he or Wade.

Assuming Wade takes place sometime next season

It is dumb. KD was not the reason they won. He was just part of it. 3 years is not nearly enough time to get your number retired. It's kind of like how most Hall of Fames have been diluted to the Halls of very good.

This is a team honor, so comparing it to the standards of the hall of fame is a poor comparison, IMO. There's no minimum number of playing years for this type of honor. Yeah, only three years, but he did a lot and played perfectly those three years except for getting injured. He probably did more in those three years than what many other players who have their jerseys retired by a team accomplished in their time with their respective teams.

I’m not sure many people have said he didn’t earn it. The timing of this announcement is just a little bizarre in my opinion.

I think we could debate whether it should be retired. If Kawhi leaves Toronto and they immediately announce his number will be retired, I’d also think that’s bizarre, regardless of whether he deserves it or not.

No problem with it. Not sure why they didn't wait till his career is over, seems kinda strange and forced.

He could comeback late in his career you never know lol

Ok. That is fair.

Don’t think they will officially retire it until he retires.

Doesn’t change anything for me, 3 years doesn’t get your number retired, not for me.

It's the millennial way.
