A collective sigh of relief swept through Pittsburgh Monday evening as an ESPN report noted the MRI done on running back DeAngelo Williams didn’t reveal any broken bones in his right foot and ankle, and he’ll be listed as day-to-day. The Steelers take on the Bengals Saturday in the AFC Wild Card playoffs, and without Williams, they essentially have no running game.

Williams injured his ankle on a tackle in the second quarter of the team’s 28-12 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday. He left the game and didn’t return. Williams greeted his teammates in the tunnel to the locker room after the game in a walking boot.

The Steelers got 24 yards on 12 carries after Williams’ injury from Fitzgerald Toussaint, an undrafted free agent in 2014 who spent most of this season on the Steelers’ practice squad. He had six carries prior to Sunday. Jordan Todman, who was acquired off waivers from the Panthers after final cuts, is behind him on the depth chart. Fullback Will Johnson has taken snaps at halfback this season as well.

Great News! :suds:

But it really irks me when these analysts say things like "without said player they essentially have no running/passing game". How the fuck would they really know that? On any given gameday, any unknown player has a chance to make a name for himself. This franchise embodies the phrase "standard is the standard", of which I highly believe in, not to mention everyone within this organization. Anybody on this roster is employed for a reason, so if Fitzgerald Touissant is the next man up, then Tomlin & Coblert have instilled the faith that this kid can get the job done. Just like Josh Harris last January. He had all the physical tools to get the job done. No it didn't work out the way they wanted, but that wasn't because of Harris, that was because the entire offensive line was getting dominated.

Pointless rant over lol

But in all seriousness... In the event that D-Will isn't ready, do the Steelers shop FA & PS's now to get someone ready? Or do they feel safe with a tandem of Touissant, Todman, and possibly W-Johnson?

The FA pool is sparse, but there are known commodities with PIT experience. Ben Tate, Dri Archer & Josh Harris are available. lol. I think the "bad karma" stench will be enough to keep them away from Tate & Archer. Harris would likely still be around if it weren't for his shoulder injury that required surgery. He's a faster & stronger version of Todman, and possibly Touissant. I'm still a Harris-homer so take that with a grain of salt lol.

Other names to consider: Isaiah Pead (recently signed & cut), Knoshawn Moreno, Pierre Thomas, Trent Richardson (yikes)

Hell even Jonathan Dwyer is available :nono:

Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams has no structural damage in ankle

By Gerry Dulac / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams does not have a fracture or any major damage in his right ankle and has an outside chance, albeit a small one, of playing Saturday night in a wild-card playoff game in Cincinnati, a team source confirmed to the Post-Gazette.

Williams had an MRI Sunday night after the Steelers returned from their 28-12 victory in Cleveland and is expected to be listed as day-to-day for the Bengals. His biggest issue could be a matter of pain tolerance, the source said.

ESPN first reported that Williams did not sustain any fractures or structural damage to his ankle and is day-to-day.

The Steelers do not intend to sign a veteran running back for the postseason as they did a year ago when they brought in Ben Tate, after Le’Veon Bell was injured in the season finale, and started him in a wild-card playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens. They intend to use Fitzgerald Toussaint, Jordan Todman and fullback Will Johnson against the Bengals.

Williams was injured early in the second quarter against the Browns and did not return to the game. But after being taken on a cart to the locker room, he later returned to the sideline in full uniform and tried testing his ankle by bouncing on his feet.

After the game, Williams left the locker room wearing a protective walking boot without the aid of crutches. Asked how he was feeling, Williams said, “I feel good.”

Curiously, the Steelers think Williams might have had a better chance of playing against the Bengals if the game were Sunday, rather than Saturday, giving his injured ankle another day of rest.

Williams, 32, finished fourth in the AFC in rushing with 907 yards on 200 carries, a 4.5-yard average. Before he was injured against the Browns, he had only 8 yards on five carries.

This is the smart decision... Doin what they did last year wasn't very smart. They took a FA fresh off the street, Ben Tate, and threw him into the fire instead of pushing Harris harder. Granted they only ran the ball 15 times in that game last January.

Haley has to do a better job regardless. You have to figure out a way to establish some sort of run game instead of abandoning it altogether.

The Steelers signed rookie RB Abou Toure to their practice squad.
The Steelers signed rookie running back Abou Toure to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Toure was signed by the Indianapolis Colts in May after the undrafted free agent made an impact during the team’s rookie minicamp when he was brought in for a tryout. He was waived by the Colts on Aug. 31.

Toure, 6-2, 230 pounds, bounced around in college, playing at Valley Forge Military College in 2010, Dean Junior College in 2011, Utah State in 2012 and the University of Tennessee Martin (UT Martin) for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He rushed for 1,647 yards and 10 touchdown in his two seasons at UT Martin, including 1,138 yards his senior year.

Saturday night will be a tandem of Touissant, Todman & W-Johnson. Scary thin, especially considering how they deploy the FB in most packages. Meaning they will lean heavily on Touissant & Todman. Pray for zero injuries!!!
