Flames have called up goalie Jon Gillies using an emergency call-up to backup Chad Johnson tonight.

How long before the Flames brass take a trip to Seattle?

This shit has to just be gnawing at Bettman. He has a better chance of convincing Donald Trump of paying for a new arena in Calgary as he does any government in Alberta at the moment.

Oh. Wait. I do recall a Premier. Name might have been Lougheed.

"Let the Eastern Bastards freeze in the dark" [shame twitter wasnt invented then].

OK, have to go further back in the time machine. . .

Didn't the Flames recently defeat the Islanders? Maybe the Buds should save the fishing trips until after the season is over (or mid-April, whatever comes first)

At least we didn't lose to the Oilers four times this year.

I heard the interview on 590. Bob McCown asked King something like "When Edmonton were angling for an arena Katz & company went to Seattle to look at arena sites and kind of shook things up. Are you guys planning a trip to Seattle anytime soon?" to which King replied "There would be no threat to move, we would just move, and it would be over. And I'm trying my level best to make sure that day never comes frankly,". It sounded half-serious and half-joking. It was weird but it didn't really sound like he just made a relocation threat for a Calgary team on Toronto radio.

An hour later, Glenn Healy was on the same show and McCown mentioned it and what was going on and McCown himself said "I think he was joking but maybe he wasn't?" and Healy went on to tell an anecdote about King claiming to him that the Flames lost money on the Heritage Classic in 2011 and Healy saying it was an absurd notion that they would lose money on an event like that but that King had the same tone at that time as he did when he told Bob the Flames would just move.

Also, why is the CBC just putting a story up about this today when the interview was three days ago?

The fact is Bettman himself hasn't mentioned the threat of moving and never will because the owners would never, ever, ever vote for the Flames to leave Calgary even if they're stuck in the Saddledome for another 50 years for a myriad of reasons.

I don't see how this new arena gets built without some public money, but it sure would be great if they come up with a way to cap it at some reasonable figure and add in some kind of user fee/ticket tat/lottery to make up the perceived shortfall. In a perfect world, the owners would foot the entire bill, but today is April 1st :D
I think the NHL might need to try and find them a new owner. There's next to zero chance the owners would approve a move from the 4th largest Canadian market and almost as slim a chance of getting any significant public money for a new arena. I just don't see the leverage here.
