It's the evacuation plan that was wrong here. The clearing of brush does nothing for fires of this magnitude. Smaller fires can be stopped with that kind of thing but you'd need to raze all vegetation fro more than a kilometre around the city to stop a fire like this. No one wants to do that.

They needed to play it safe here and they didn't.

there is allegedly a science to selective razing/burning at certain times of the year ... thats why theyre supposed to do it regularly ... to get rid of the kindling that will fuel the infernos

... but then ... mother nature :noidea:

Yeah. Mother nature always wins. She's also the only one who can stop this thing.

I guess i just look at it differently having seem the awesome power of a forest fire first hand .. almost every summer really ... you have fires that go for 10 hectares to 20000 hectares in 3 hours .. and then its approaching a city ... should they have evacuated a working city when it was at 10 hectares :noidea: I dont know if any amount of planning or computer simulating could have helped forecast mother natures plans :noidea:

That is where the training comes in handy. You know the conditions are ripe for a small blaze to blow up in a couple of hours and know a city with a bunch of people could be in the way without the infrastructure needed for a swift evacuation. You knew the conditions were ripe for the fire to grow with the fuel loading and humidity conditions.

As soon as the blaze was spotted and knowing the limitations, voluntary evacuations should have been in order with ground personnel in place to assist. Even getting 5% of the population or a couple of neighborhoods to do voluntary evacs would lessen the severity. But knowing know the limitations of this particular situation, yes, even a 10 hectare fire should have been treated with a much higher priority level than it was initially.

It's crazy. My first thought is always "it's a fire, put it out", like it should be simple. But until one grasps the magnitude of the size of these things and the persistence and unpredictability that a wildfire has, we just don't understand it. I hope for the best for the people up there. Get to safety and stay safe.

the fire I referenced above that went from 10 hectares to 20000 last year was the Elaho Valley fire which is "near" Whistler ski resort ... what amazed me at the time was that the report was " Elaho Fire now covers 20000 hectares ... 0 % contained "

CRAZY!

anecdotal but my friend was explaining away the traffic chaos of everyone getting out of town yesterday ... damn near everyone up there has 3 trucks, RVs, 5th wheels, snowmobiles, jet skis, boats and they were trying to get them all out of the burn zone at the same time ... and alot of those vehicles werent gassed up :noidea:

I wonder if Paul Dorodooshbag realizes how many British Columbians have worked in the Fort Mac area over the last 20 years or so.

I don't know what's worse, the above tweet itself or the fact it received 3 likes.

1st off. Nice job with the name.

2nd. Mr. Dorodooshbag also forgot about the people with loved ones that have either only own the clothes on their backs and the cars they are getting around in or God forbid, they don't even know if they are alive or dead. Hell the ladt thing i heard on my aunt was 7 this morning and I don't even know when that was sent.

imo natural disasters are never really the time to get political ... on either side

I think he's referring to this:

And while I have no idea if that is an accurate statistic or not, it is pretty fucking damning if it is true and it's less "Cons blaming fire on Notley" and more "Journalist calling out extremely dumb decision by Notley".

I only know a couple of Maritimers, but they seem to me to be some of the most genuine and caring people you will ever meet.
