Uhhh...you guys aren't burning up, right? I know Fort McMurray is pretty far north for our Calgary and Edmonton crew, but I wanted to check... Some of these scenes are giving me anxiety. They've told people to evacuate but the traffic is almost trapping people on the highways.

It's pretty remote up there pix and the main highway (Highway 63) is the only way in and out of town by automobile. Thoughts and prayers to the good people of Fort Mac.

I was looking on the map and was a bit surprised there was a fairly populated city that far north. Praying for rain. And it's that one road thing that was freaking me out. People were forced to get out, but everyone left at the same time, and the fire was approaching the road. Terrifying videos coming from there.

I hope everyone is safe. If anyone needs a place to stay don't hesitate to ask. I'll try to get Pix's address for you.

I have a queen air mattress and terrible water pressure, but I live in a fracking town so you'll all fit rigghhhht in!

Twas deleted...assuming someone made an ass of themselves? I did see people blaming the government for a natural disaster and the "perfect storm" of weather. (I realize funding is likely involved, but come on...)

While I'm very far from Fort Mac, a lot of Maritimers have left the not so great economy of the Canadian east coast for Alberta. I have a cousin as well as an old friend in Fort Mac, both have checked in as being safe.

I used to work up there regularly. I still go up once a year or so on a certain project. Luckily I'm not supposed to go this year until September.

I just spoke with a few friends who still live up there and it sounds pretty bad. One told me she has never been so terrified as driving down the 63 today; flames extremely close on both sides. Just so people know, driving on the 63 is a shit show at the best of times. I can't even imagine what it's like once the traffic breaks today.

For all those who haven't been around true boreal forest it is hard to believe how bad this can get. This forest is designed to burn. The spruce trees are pretty much wicks. The only thing that will stop this fire is some serious rain. Hopefully it comes soon.

Which includes me.

Me: I offered a place to stay to X,Y and Z

Missus Banyeah: Give me a couple of hours notice!!! I need to clean the house!!

Me: :burt:

I'm envisioning a beleaguered crew waltzing into your home, exhausted and stressed. "Is that...is that a dirty dish in the sink? WE WILL BE TAKING OURSELVES ELSEWHERE, THANK YOU."

That's awful. It's as bad as Tim Horton's "If you smell like smoke, your coffee is half off" promotion.
