37+ guaranteed million for a guy whose had 7 starts in his career and only 3 worth talking about. Houston.....

View attachment 96191

Oh god, what a joke. Houston was just starting to reinvent themselves and then they tie this fucking albatross contract around their neck. Just shaking my head.

Fan's care way too much about money a lot of times in the NFL.

The fact is that there are only 2 ways to acquire players in the NFL. Cash or draft picks.

Houston decided cash was the way to go and if anyone looked at the QB's in this upcoming draft that is a completely understandable position.

Giving Osweiler this contract isn't really all that different than trading up for a QB in round 1 for a QB when you factor in the subsequent moves Houston would have had to make because of that.

Now instead of finding a vet WR and a vet RB (or whatever their needs are) and all the cash it takes to fill those holes, they can draft those positions. They also likely don't have to keep an expensive QB vet in place nearly as long as they would have if they were taking a rookie QB.

Giving Osweiller that deal is a LOT safer than targeting a rookie QB in this draft IMO and it really isn't a lot more money when you factor everything in.

Think of it this way:

Houston could have:
1) Kept Foster at $6.5M (or went after one of the other expensive vets like Ivory or Martin)
2) Signed an expensive vet WR to pair with Hopkins.
3) Used their 1st and 2nd round pick (and maybe more) to jump in front of the 49ers for Goff.

Or they could
1) Cut Foster (or sign and expensive vet) and use their 1st round pick on Elliot or their 2nd round pick on Henry.
2) Sign Osweiller
3) Draft a 1st or 2nd round WR.

When you run the numbers both in the short and long term the money isn't nearly as different as you think it would be.

The long and short of it is that Houston NEEDED a huge boost of offensive skill position talent this offseason. They have a solid defense in place where they can win NOW. Going into next season with Hoyer as your QB was an absolute nonstarter. Getting into position to get a QB everyone can like was expensive draft wise. Going with a lesser QB prospect just because he is the next one on the draft board is a recipe for disaster often times.

This might not work out. But it was a very understandable move for a team in the position that the Texans were in. It allows them to go young and high talent upside at BOTH RB and QB which they NEEDED to do. The simple fact was that the Texans were unlikely going to be in position to draft an elite QB early with the defense they have and the division they play in (and if they were it probably meant that the people making the decisions today wouldn't been employed to make the decision tomorrow).

* I used WR as a second need. It could be LB or DL or CB. Don't know the team well enough to know what they are looking at. Do know the team enough to know that QB and RB was the top 2 positions they needed this offseason after cutting Foster.

Just some rough numbers.

Marvin Jones
Chris Ivory
Jared Goff
vs
Osweiller
Will Fuller
Derrick Henry

The money difference there is not nearly as much as you think.

And Houston needs a DT as it turns out (good year to be drafting one BTW).

Chris Ivory
Snack Harrison
Jared Goff
vs
Osweiller
Andrew Billings
Derrick Henry
The Osweiller way is actually probably CHEAPER.

I just don't think there are too many paths a person can map out realistically where Houston is better off for not signing Osweiller. Obviously how he does is a big impact in the ultimate judgement....but there were just so few good QB options for a team like Houston to go and all of them are wrought with more peril than the Osweiller contract has.

I think its pretty funny that Matt Flynn is the one quarterback squawking about the money.

Osweiler wasn't nearly prolific enough in college to warant that comparison. Plus, Leinhart never beat Brady.

What about Rodgers??? NOT SAYING HE WILL BE THIS GOOD!

Rodgers got a 6 year 65 mil dollar (87 mil equiv today) contract in 2008 partway through his first year.

At the time he got the contract had 3 years of backup to Favre, 7 starts, 4-3 record, 93 QB rating, 13 TD's to 5 INT's 9 fumbles and 1 game winning drive.

His draft stock to get drafted as the eventual replacement to the all time passing leader was based off of good play over just 650 college pass attempts in the pac 10.

Osweiler got a 4 year 72 mil dollar contract (equiv of 4 year 53 mil in 2008 money with QB salaries spiking higher than the cap raise, this is similar) partway through his first year.

At the time he had 3 years of backup to Peyton, 7 starts, 5-2 record, 86.4 QB rating, 11 TD's to 6 INT's 4 fumbles and 2 game winning drives.

His draft stock to get drafted as the eventual replacement to the all time passing leader was based off of good play over just 680 college pass attempts in the pac 10.

I mean if you are looking at the closest thing to Osweiler and his deal in the past, can you come up with a closer comparison than that?

Wow, looking back at that Rodgers deal, that was amazing. 7 starts, got 40.5 mil guaranteed (in 2008), 4th highest paid QB behind Peyton, Ben and Carson. Osweiler 37 mil guaranteed and 15th highest paid.

This makes Russell Wilson's 4 years 87 mil seem like an absolute bargain

As fans we should not be thrilled by this because all it does is set a precedence. If Osweiller's value is this much, imagine how much a QB a caliber of an Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, or whenever Russell Wilson reups again is going to cost?

Also I know it's two different sports but something doesn't feel right about Osweiller making 18 mil and Steph Curry making 12 mil and someone like Lebron who has long been established as the cream of the crop and face of his sport making only 5 more mil than Osweiller (23 mil)

Osweiler has just as many rings as Wilson.

The difference is Rodgers showed the tools of an elite QB in college. Hence why he and Alex Smith were in the discussion to get drafted #1 overall. Brock was never once mentioned in that discussion. Two different situations. The Packers saw Rodgers practice every day and knew they had an incredible talent. Houston on the other hand is blindly throwing darts hoping they hit big with Osweiller. Kevin Kolb anybody? If Osweiller was Rodgers good, the Broncos would have more than willing to match that.

With the news out of Cleveland today, I am now very happy we signed Osweiller, even if the money is insane. That takes us out of the market for Johnny Fucktard. He's someone else's problem now. We've got our quarterback.

It is easy to say he was a slam dunk when looking back at it with today's knowledge, but some of that is a bit distorted there by how good he has been since.

Yeah pundits did talk about him going #1 overall, maybe as good as Alex Smith, obviously teams did not. Not saying they were the exact same situation, it's impossible for two situations to be exact, but just really really similar. And he did look good in college. He was a Tedford QB... Akili, Harrington, David Carr, Dilfer, and Boller (guy who started over Rodgers) were his guys he sent to the NFL. There were questions of if his great play was real or not, just like when Boller got taken 19th overall.

You bring up the Packers seeing Rodgers every day and knowing he was great, but I don't think that is true, or they could have extended him before he started for a LOT less and not waited until his asking price made him the 4th highest paid QB. And what was the reports from that 07 off-season? Randy Moss to the Packers, but GB didn't want to give up a high draft pick and was countering with Rodgers. Oak ultimately decided no need for Rodgers when they had the #1 pick and Russell there, and sent him to NE instead. And after Favre retired who they took with the 56th pick in the draft? Brian Brohm 3rd qb selected. You don't draft that high for a career backup, he was drafted as a challenge for the starting QB job (one which he failed miserably at and Rodgers dominated).

I get Rodgers had a bit up on Osweiler at that point, but as far as a similarity yes that's really really close. Also you have to look at cap space too. Was it Denver not willing to match, or not able to match? Bronco's have about 9 mil in cap space currently... and the 2nd fewest players under contract in the league. They have yet to fill in holes of a slew of players signed away or free agents and would be looking at releasing more guys just to get Osweiler on that deal. GB had piles of cap space to use, losing Favre had them up over 30 mil in cap space that year. Basically they could sign Brock, release Ware and Clady and they can afford rookies and league min guys to fill out their roster.

I just remember watching Rodgers at Cal and seeing the special arm he had combined with his mobility. Personally I had him rated ahead of Alex Smith in that draft and was thoroughly surprised when he slipped so far. Rodgers was a special talent coming out of college. He nearly led his Cal team to a national championship his junior year. They were 10-1 and lost to #1 USC on a goal line stand I believe.

I watch a lot of Pac 10/12 football and I don't recall seeing anything special out of Brock Osweiler besides his massive size and above average arm. When comparing the two prospects coming out of college, if I'm going to blindly roll the dice on one and give them big money it's without a doubt Rodgers.

Osweiler may very well end up being a successful/productive QB but when comparing the two team's decision to give each QB a big contract, to me it made a lot more sense with Rodgers who was drafted as an elite talent coming out of college as opposed to Brock who was really a project QB.

Ok, and I'm fine with that... Honestly with how QB prices have gone up that Rodgers deal would be something like 5 years, 109 mil.

Just was saying with all these other guys, Kolb, or Flynn or Whitehurst, Rodgers honestly isn't a bad comparison either.
