The structure of college football is completely different than any other sport. Also add into that fact that there are only 4 spots, which is significantly less than any of other sports and by a large margin. College football conferences and divisions are not created equal like all professional sports are. And while college basketball isn't there are 68 teams, so that set up is completely different too. I mean hell there are 5 P5 conferences and 4 spots so what's the point in only taking conference champs when one is left out anyway?
They are more equal then you want to believe. And yes Professional sports has had certain conferences a lot better than others.
Look at the NBA last year. The west was head and shoulder better than the east.
A ninth place West team was left out of the playoffs but could have been about 4th place in the East.
Thats just the breaks you have deal with in sports.
The SEC plays an entire conference schedule to determine who the best team is in that conference. We don't need a do over for any team that didn't win that conference.
