Just circumstance. 2015 is a good example. Jets lost out on the wild card on a tiebreaker to Pittsburgh. Bills and Dolphins went 8-8 and 6-10 while the Ravens and Browns went 5-11 and 3-13. So obviously the AFC East was better than the AFC North, even though the North got 2 playoff teams.Im not even being a wise ass, but how is it that they have less postseason appearances than any other division in the NFL in that time span? It cant just be the loss (or 2) to the Pats?
In the 10 seasons where they haven't had a wild card winner, 7 of those the 2nd place team finished either tied (and lost the tiebreaker) or 1 game behind the wild card winner. And in most of those seasons, the 3rd and 4th place teams were not your typical bottom feeders. 9 out of the 15 years, the last place team has won 6+ games. And no one would argue that a 6-win team is any good, but for a 4th place team it actually is.
Looking at who has played in the playoffs only shows a small portion of the picture. Would you argue that the AFC East is better than the NFC East over the last 8 years, since the AFC East has had 3 Wild Card winners while the NFC East has only had 2? Probably not.
