Looks like a Tuesday night Petco crowd there. What's with all the empty seats? And this is a sell-out? Allot of fans musta come dressed as chairs.

Thought that ball was out when it left the bat.

Not surprisingly, Volquez is shaky as hell.

That's flat-out lewd how Sandoval stands there frozen at the plate holding his sack with his left hand. He makes me sick. That's good for kids to see that?

Luck does have a part in that, though.

Washington fell into Strasburg and Harper, but they did have the Zimmerman(n) brothers and made savvy trades (Gio, anyone?). Meanwhile, Houston drafted Correa #1 over-all. He may be good, but he was drafted for signability, not pure talent.

I must respectfully disagree. "fell into" ?? They had the #1 pick both years and picked the obvious #1 pick both times. MAYBE "fell into" Drew Storen. More definitely Danny Espinosa (3rd round pick) or Jordan Zimmerman (2nd). But Ryan Zimmerman was "best pick on the board" at #4 overall.

Yes, luck is involved (Tony Torcato, anyone - altho he was a late-1st-round pick). Yes, they made great picks when they had early picks. But when you pick at 5 or less, you tend to be "lucky" (no, not always). They also made great trades. We'll see if Houston can do the same. Maybe I should have used the Marlins as a comparison (but they never really lined up the stars for 3-5 years of "going for it", just sold off and then re-loaded for a 1 year run).

Belt looks lost at the plate. Zero confidence. I've had 3-1/2 beers and I wouldn't have been that far in front of that curveball.

I think he meant luck as in they got once in a decade prospects two years in a row

That's my point. They had the top pick for two years where there was a CLEAR#1. Not like the W's or '9ers with their respective Smiths, or Houston with Correa.

Bumgarner's pitch count climbing. Nice job by Volquez to at least draw some pitches.

Can you believe the Padres are third in the NL in doubles this season?

Posey is due for a homer.

edit: or a walk.....

He's also due for some base hits.

And ball 4 looked strangely like a strike to me.

Surprised to see Guzman still in the league.

Hammer, how is his D for you guys? For us it was WORSE than just placing a velcroe board at 1B.

OK, I can see that. But with #1 picks you have a pretty good chance of getting great guys (not a LOCK, but pretty damn good).

He's been a good value. Year-before-last he was super solid at the plate and filled in admirably when we traded Adrian and Rizzo. No complaints.

Shoot, I drank too much last night, then woke up at 5:30 and now after a few cold ones, I'm about to pass out for a dozen hours or so. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Later, fellas. :suds:
