When Dyson first took over as closer his stuff was as good as any I've seen. Lights out as I remember. Since then he has lost a lot of what he had and has not shown signs of getting it back. Therefore we have guys capable of doing the job. I'll let you decide "closer" or" best" available.
I think this is pretty spot-on. When Dyson was our set-up man, particularly last year, he had the nastiest and most unhittable stuff I've seen in a really long time. Since he's transitioned to the closer role, that nasty stuff has disappeared big time. He's still got effective pitches, but he's not dominating guys like he used to. His control seems to have taken a hit, as has his velocity. Perhaps he has changed his approach (whether consciously or not) since moving into the role, perhaps fatigue from over-use has taken over, or maybe even a little of both (although I definitely lean toward fatigue more than anything).

Dyson is still effective as a closer, as he's converted 21 of 24 this year. But anyone who has watched him pitch over the last month and a half knows that he can often be a bit shaky and rarely does he have a true shutdown inning where the opposition doesn't even sniff getting someone on base. He isn't the same dominant Dyson we saw in 2015 and the first 1-2 months of this season.

I think we probably stick with Dyson as closer unless he starts to really blow up. At that point, I have a feeling that Banister would go with a Bush-Kela-Diekman-Jeffress closer committee, or much like Romeo and other have suggested, no real closer role.

Overthinking on Banny's part???

It's possibly either a message to DDJ or he's hoping as the game progresses it'll turn into a "two leadoff hitters" situation.

Or BannyRooster may be off his meds.

Second answer is correct.

Plus, Hamels is actually a pretty good hitter as far as pitchers go.

If DeShields isn't expected to hit better than Hamels then he might not need to be in the lineup.

I just noticed that Luc is batting third. That will hopefully pay some nice dividends.

Nice to use stats to make your point, except where they don't support it. :dhd:

Yeah I know, but everytime Diekman is in there I'm just waiting on the wheels to come off, that's one of those instances where seeing a guy pitch holds precedence over stats

And I think you noticed this when he was suddenly not being used nearly as much and moreso in a lefty specialist way, though not completely

That's kinda the way I see Dyson. Good stats but slowly unwinding.

Keep feeling that way I guess...I don't really get feels when anyone pitches. Well I do when Yu and Cole do, but they are good feels.

Can I ask why that is?
I was not able to get into the site until now. But to me Kela and Bush are rookies and would not be able to handle the load Dyson has. Dyson righted a lot of things when he took over. But I am in favor of mixing and matching our relievers as the situation dictates.

My point is that people say these things about other pitchers all the time, but rarely Diekman, just don't get it,, he scares me the most with a 1 run lead out of Dyson, Kela, Bush or Barnette

I haven't seen Jeffress pitch enough to make a judgement but the numbers and early results are not in his favor

That's not really the thinking behind it.

I am not gonna make an assessment after 3 appearances for Jeremy. Diekman's K/9 makes up for his BB/9 so I don't get that worried when he pitches. Relievers do piss me off though...they have one damn job and it's to throw strikes. Look at Harris yesterday coming in and not throwing strikes. Would have driven me crazy.

I know he is probably just trying to get DeShields and Choo back to back. To me that is where the overthinking part comes in.
