I agree that most team players should just sit and I believe they will.Next season should be a no surprise rebuilding progress. So tell me then, who will be our QB we build around if not Watson?

He's not in this draft as far as I can tell...but you never know, look at Dak. Someone else posted the idea of trading Smith and a 4th for Garoppolo which I liked, but other than that I think we bide our time. We won't be in contention for a few years and we have a lot of holes to fill. Sure QB is one of them, and I've said it before, but there is no way we should use the #2 on a QB in this draft.

If we did, no way in hell I'd put him in AT ALL this season. I'd rather go with Ponder to be the punching bag next season while Watson holds the clippy and learns how not to eyeball fuck his first option. I still don't like Watson...very V.Y. II in my eyes.

haaa

i don't know if Watson is"'very V.Y.", but IMO his passing wasn't THAT sharp as the stats might imply (against Alabama). But this is only one game and the scouts should see the entire picture. They can also determine if the Clemson offense is more pro style vice spread style. So MAYBE his career stats are ok if taken in the pro style context?

Speaking of which, was Trubisky in a spread offense at NC? As we all know, QB's in spread offenses have inflated stats. Not by a LOT, but it is inflated due to the high number of short passes.

As much as we need a QB, we can't force one either. drafting a defensive stud that is more likely to pan out, isn't so bad. I would take Allen who pans out All-Pro, even after Armstead and Buckner, over Watson who never rises above 'starting QB'.

This is my line of thinking, pretty please DO NOT FORCE A PICK no matter what the NFL pundits say or try to make the QB candidates look like a lock. I know that most GM's don't fall into that trap (or do they), but I do think that we need to be methodical and have some patience with this blow up and rebuild. Again, we're not going to be contenders next year, and probably the year after so we have to lay the bricks at the bottom that will hold the rest of the building up. As noted by most every analyst, we do have some pieces already so we need to stay the course, draft smart, and spend our cap money wisely.

So So True. Even though Niners need a QB, they cannot force a pick for this position. I think Allen will be a very good player and possibly be an All Pro by his 2nd or 3rd year. He's a safe pick. If any of the QB's fall in the 3rd round, then I would advocate for it. Like several of the posters have mentioned, Niners are in a rebuilding mode and it's going to take a minimum of two years. They will not be contenders in 2017 and 2018. Maybe in 2019, they make the playoffs. I just hope Jed has learned his lessons. I do believe in miracles.

Yep.

But this is the scenario of QB at #2 overall, it might not be 'forcing it' later in Round 1? I'd certainly try to trade up into late Round 1, if that is the spot for a QB? It won't be cheap but the QB situation warrants it.

If we can get a hungry team to bite and give up a later 1st and maybe a 2nd or 3rd I'd do that as well. If not...guess we wait and see who the Browns go with and the we go to the PBA if it fits our needs...and needs we have a lot of.

Niners Will Have to Strengthen Offensive Line

Wow, i thought this offensive line wasn't so bad as is?! Especially early in the season, their pass blocking was pretty good. Disappointing to see Garnett with such a low grade, but he joined the team late so his early snaps was really his 'off season'. Not worried about Garnett right now. Trent Brown is clearly a huge find, because you normally spend much higher picks for quality OT's.

We can always strengthen units on the team, but their are other spots to strengthen FIRST. Good thing is you can draft a linemen later, to help with depth.

Grant Cohn: 49ers will need a QB in 2017 — here’s what they need to do

this thinking makes sense because there are no top QB prospect. We know we don't want to force a QB so we HAVE to go this route, not plan to go.

Don't think Cutler is the target because decision making is the biggest intangible you need. I'd rather go with a less starting experience like a Thad Lewis over Cutler, who'll frustrate the hell out of fans. I'd rather try Ponder over Cutler.

“One of the things that has really interested a lot of the candidates is the ability to start new,” Rapoport said. “They need to restock the roster a little bit. That’s something for a lot of these candidates, they really like that. Rarely do you get to come in and make your imprint on things, and that’s the opportunity that will be presented.”

With that clean slate comes the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, nearly $78 million in cap space and the absence of bad contracts that limit roster flexibility. Rapoport explained that those factors are “very, very appealing” for each candidate who has interviewed thus far.

“I’ve heard that from several people,” he said. “The fact that you come in, and you have all the tools. There’s certainly some young talent (on the roster). If you look at the last two drafts, there’s some stuff to like there, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Then you have endless cap space, and you have a lot of draft capital. The No. 2 pick is either a great pick, a great opportunity, or it’s something you turn into a lot of picks in the future.”

At least Baalke didn't leave the next GM in salary cap hell. That is why i agreed with him not signing the top FA's during his tenure. If he listened to fans, then we would have multiple bad contracts today. That would set back the next GM at least a year, if not 2.

That's what happened to Bill Walsh when he returned under John York, he inherited cap hell which takes 1-2 years to shed.

The sack total allowed can be misleading where at times Kap held the ball too long. But Garnett did struggle in pass protection. Trent Brown was truly a "gem" especially he was drafted in the 7th round. Niners could draft a lineman on the 3rd day of the draft for depth and maybe possibly become a starter down the road.

No thanks. Cutler can play somewhere else. He throws a lot of interceptions. I would rather try Ponder and keep building the defense and draft a wideout.

Yep, even an incomplete pass or throw 'out of bounds', beats an INT.

IF Garnett continues to struggle next season in pass protect, then yikes! But for me, he has rope and i'm not worried about it.

Granted he was projected a much better run blocker, than pass protector. But when you trade up into the 1st round, you should still be better than average.

Cohn's story is nice and all....Wolf ain't the GM yet, and McVay is a Ram. A far more plausible scenario that would unfold is that McDaniels is named the HC, puts in his offensive system and the GM-to-be works a deal with the Patriots for Garoppolo. As I stated, if anyone knows his plus/minus traits, it's the former OC of the Pats.

Rebuilding the 49ers - Part 3: Free agency - Inside the 49ers

That doesn’t mean Wolf will pass on every free agent this year, though. That would be a mistake. Wolf needs to make a few signings. Not blockbuster signings — strategic ones.

Ok, avoid the pricey FA's, i have always been for that. I've always been ok for signing "strategic" FA's too, granted i call them "2nd tier", or "2nd wave". Doesn't matter what we call them, i'm for signing these guys if they fit.

While the concept of vets teaching young guys, i tend to think it is overrated? Meaning i wonder if we need to sign these types just for mentoring purposes? Don't we already have older vets, what can't they mentor even though they haven't won a SB?

If Cable is the HC I might flip out. I can see this happening because York does nothing right. We have 2 top coaches waiting for us and we might pick this hump.

I really think it's between McDaniels or Shanahan. Jed knows he has to get this hiring right. It's been downright embarrassing the last couple of years. The only scenario Cable becomes the head coach is if McDaniels and Shanahan both turn down the 49ers.

Honestly if they spend money this year I hope it's to add a good O-Linemen at least one on the interior, and if they are going to have to spend money to get to the cap floor I would rather they build the offensive line because I think they need at least two starters on the interior of their line.
