He should stick to hockey. He is normally a hockey announcer.

This comment epitomizes Husker fans. "Run the damn ball!" *Nebraska runs the ball a ton* "This offense is so boring!"

With a starting QB that just chucks it up and prays, we better stick with the running game. I believe it's going to be a long season.

i'm not going to be long. will probably write more later when i have more time. the game plan was clearly "run the ball". i was a little surprised with all the recruits that were in, especially WRs. i was also wondering if they were just saving stuff and not wanting to put too much on film.

defensively - it seemed fine for not having any idea of what Fresno was going to do with all new staff. seemed like they kept it pretty simple. they played a ton of off coverage it seemed and was just giving up 1st downs and their QB was on point there in the 1st half, not missing those throws.

How many times did he just chuck it up and pray last night?

Even the one throw to Westerkamp wasn't a bad play.

The good. Our offensive line is a lot better. Procedural penalties were much better and our defense though still needs work against the pass seemed to sync up in the fourth quarter. Hopefully something clicked going forward.

The bad, Tommy is Tommy. He can't resist the high risk, high reward even if he is throwing into double coverage. Against a better team he will be giving away the ball still.

The worst? Why is Read still getting a check?

I disagree, that pass to Westercamp should of never happened. And no he didn't chuck it up as many times. It was better, but he still is going to do it, especially if he sees Westercamp out there.

Letting him run will help immensely but he is still going to give the ball away on passes that should of never been done. I'm not going to make every post about it but Tommy is a senior and should know how to check down.

The yd pass was a chuck and pray pass that the receiver who was wide open had to go back for the pass.

The 57 yd TD pass was a typical chuck and pray pass from TA. Alonzo was WIDE open and he had to slow down to have a chance to catch the damn thing. I know there will be some games where more passing will be needed, but hopefully Riley and Landsdorf sticks with this same type of game plan offensively in most games, mainly because of the extreme risk of TA's passing.

O line was good but as I said earlier our lack of depth will show if someone gets dinged up. We went nowhere when we had to replace Knevel for a few plays.

They really limited Tommy which helped a lot. Only one bad play I can remember (long 3rd down to Westerkamp).

Really didn't think Read was that bad. Their punter had more to do with our lack of a return game because he was hitting lob wedge shots. We actually adjusted to it and stopped even trying to block for Westerkamp. He made a couple bad decisions but we will improve there when teams start punting more than 25-30 yards.

Do you even know what play action is? That's the entire point of that play, for him to be wide open. Easier to slow down to catch the ball than catch up to an overthrown ball.

If that pass gets intercepted it's just as good as a long punt.

Now if he's scrambling around and chucks one 20 yards down field across his body into traffic, then yes.....that is bad. But we can't get pissed off over our QB doing exactly what every other team in the country does (take a long shot) when the consequences are possibly getting intercepted 50 yards down field.

It was a good play, and not only that, it was called from the sideline and Westerkamp was the intended target from the get-go. It wasn't just Tommy's split second decision to throw it up to him.

I'll have to watch that play again...I didn't see it that way but that explanation makes sense.

The only thing Tommy did wrong there was locking in on his intended target and ignoring the safety help.

I think it's everyone's automatic natural tendency to just rag on Tommy as soon as he throws one into double coverage now. Like no other QBs out there do that.

And actually, though they had 2 guys in the area, only 1 of them had a chance to make a play on that ball.

The ball was actually in a decent spot IIRC. My complaint is that if Westy is blanketed like that, there is a good chance somebody else was open. Like I said, I have to see the play again.

Okay, watched it again. That was a bad play. He had several other options on that play and we only needed 7 yards. Oz could have gotten the first as the checkdown.

I didn't see anything I wasn't already anticipating. The good news is there's plenty of room across the board to improve on, and I don't recall when the last time we were +2 in TO margarine for any game 09?
Much like I cringe every time TA puts the ball in the air I also expect a flag for every big hit on D now, luckily Gerry was in the doghouse or he would be dq'd for half of next weeks game. We've started a streak of consecutive games having at least 1 player ejected for tackling
