"On June 12, 2010, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln decided to leave the Big 12 Conference and join the Big Ten Conference." from the University of Nebraska...

The next year,

NYT May 2, 2011

"For the first time in its 111-year history, an organization made up of the nation’s leading research universities has voted to oust one of its members, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln."

Thus, Nebraska WAS a member of the AAU when it joined the Big Ten. It lost its membership the next year.

Who are you correcting?

Thought this was common knowledge.

Several people have mentioned that AAU membership isn't a requirement for admission to the Big Ten and mention Nebraska as proof. My point is that this is NOT proof as Nebraska WAS an AAU member WHEN they entered the Big Ten. They lost their membership AFTERWARDS. EVERY Big Ten school IS a member of the AAU (except Nebraska, NOW). There is NO evidence that would suggest that lack of AAU membership would be overlooked for expansion.

The Big 10 has literally said that it is a preference not a requirement. Thing is, the fact that Nebraska lost their AAU status provides a perfect cover for them to make exceptions…

IIRC, Nebraska lost its AAU membership when the AAU decided that they would not include the U of N Medical school in Omaha as part of it's assessment.
Not sure why. Maybe because it's not on the UNL campus, or in the same city, or something.
It's been a while. I don't remember exactly.

Mainly due to Texas.

Much like the formation of the Big 12, Texas had a hard on for Nebraska. After a number of 11-1 votes, they had convinced a number of our Big 8 brethren to vote against their own best interests. Nearly 30 years later, the lap dogs got their just rewards and left behind.

AAU is required for all schools not named Notre Dame...
You could probably add Clemson and/or FSU to that. Im sure AAU would be ideal, but B1G will make an exception for those two right off the top IMO.

If UNC (AAU)/NCSt (non) or UVA (AAU)/VT (non) ended up being package deals somewhere down the road, they might make an exception for those two schools that are close to AAU status. JMHO.

Notre Dame was just invited this year despite having low research numbers (as compared to their peers). Still, a top notch academic university. Seems like AAU is as much a club as anything and there is no real rhyme or reason on who they invite.

The billions the B1G Academic Alliance brings in dwarfs the income from CFB. AAU membership is a prerequisite to getting into that club...

I don’t doubt what you are saying wrt the $$$, but the fact that they just gave Stanford and Cal, 2 of the best academic institutions in the world, certainly the country, the cold shoulder makes me believe there’s a lot more to it than academics.

Which, let’s face facts, is the reason this thread was started at all. Gator fan wants very badly to believe that FSU would never get invited into the Big 10.
