you do realize that the athletic departments rarely build classrooms right?????

they build weight rooms & player lounges ==> stuff that only a minority of the alabama student base gets to benefit from. by no means does the money from the athletic budget go to benefit of the general student population. in fact its the complete opposite.....

alabama football took a $5.4 million subsidy last season :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:

And you do realize that when the money that was earmarked for the athletic department gets put back into the coffers for the students at the school, it helps fund all sorts of things the students need.

Amazingly the increase in revenue due to new students applying and being accepted is also helping the student side of things. booster money is pouring in to field new buildings and facilities, not just for the athletic department, but for the school in general. Envy is a terrible thing to waste, whine on.

Funny thing:

If the chancellor at Rice had said this, no one would have cared.

Texas gets the same crap. They put 5 million a year from LHN back into the university, i.e. not the athletic dept, and still get this kind of yadayada.

yeah dude i dont think you have a clue about how college sports work. alabama football makes money to pay for alabama womens soccer, womens basketball, etc.

most of the profit goes towards upgrading athletic facilities.

only a very select few group of schools actually use athletic proceeds to go to the general student population. college sports are never about making profit but promoting the schools brand name. they are the biggest advertising campaign in the US and nothing more.

so who provides the cash for stuff that the students need. well theres something called tuition, state funding, and donations (not everyone who writes a check to alabama sends it just to the athletic department). and all of that gets put into something called an endowment (alabama's endowment is 631 million).

and then theres these things called fundraising drives. alabama is not quite as good as pulling these drives as say michigan, notre dame & usc but they can put up some impressive figures. UA fundraising drive hits goal | TuscaloosaNews.com

from 2002-2008 alabama raised 512 mill to "our students future"

so lemme ask you something........

how big of a fuck do you think the alabama chancellor really gives for the 20 mill a year saban brings in to the athletic program

and lemme ask you another question, while alabama pulls 500 mill fundraising drives michigan is pulling 3.2 billion fundraising drives. USC is trying to work towards a 6 billion goal. the truth is its that "the best financial decision" a school can make revolves around hiring a good president/chancellor who can mastermind those fundraising drives not a 4 time bcs winning football coach.

comments like this are why the more like minded schools such as michigan (8.46 bill endowment), USC & texas are laughing at bama

even if rice got saban and won 3 BCS titles he would NEVER EVER say something like that

the schools that think this way get laughed at by the real schools (like rice)

The Magic Of Nick Saban: Everyone Wants To Go To Alabama - Forbes

Juneau Construction Company

"In construction is the Presidential Phase II and the student center at Presidential Village,” he said. “Both of those are just in progress and will not open until August 2014. The Presidential Phase II is an 860-bed residential facility. The student center will feature a recreation center, office for housing and residential communities, and a dedicated storm shelter.”

The area near the Ferguson Center and the Crimson Promenade is also currently under construction. Leopard said this construction is part of a 75,000-square-foot addition to the Ferguson Center, which will include additional space for the SUPeStore, Career Center and new offices, but will not open until 2014.

Now, call me ignorant of what Saban means to the University if you must, but i think the unprecedented growth, increase of revenue and the recent incoming class that was better than 50% out of state students that included 241 merit scholar students is pretty staggering growth due to the hiring of a coach who gets his program in front of a national audience on a regular basis. How you ask? with one off games to start the year against top teams, National title games, High profile matchups like the one with LSU upcoming this year and the Texas A&M game earlier this year and most probably an Auburn matchup upcoming that promises to be a blood bath if they continue to improve.

Read the articles and look at the buildings being built currently. Among them not mentioned are various renovation projects to science labs, technology centers and various other student needed buildings and classrooms.

See that the Football program earns every dollar that the athletic department needs and the 5.4 million you laughed at that they took is but a drop in the bucket of what they take in each year and would not even cover the expenses on a bowl trip for the team. Being a state run school i am sure the money was probably the least amount they could take, since its clear they didnt need it. And while you are at it, notice that Saban's worth to the school extends way beyond a 20 million dollar figure that i have no idea where you got it from.
As i stated before, envy is a terrible thing to waste, so whine on.

If you're making enough revenue that there is enough leftover (after cost) to upgrade and build new facilities, that's considered profit.

That's how successful US businesses operate.

i think you are missing the point.....

only shitty schools with redneck fanbases have their "best financial interest" invested in a single coaching hire

i can guarantee to you that texas, penn state, usc, michigan, ohio state, & notre dame dont need to pull that sorta bullshit.

college athletics are not run with the same mentality as a business. at the end of the day their first & primary goal is about promoting the name brand of the school.

if they were about making a profit as you claim we would see every athletic program play football & basketball then drop every sport they could while still complying with ncaa & title 9 requirements

I dont think i am missing the point at all. This was said in a news story about the Coach who has rejuvenated a school that was down. This was said by a Chancellor of a University who has increased its students to its highest level, increased its revenue by over double in 6 years time and has its most recent incoming freshmen class with more Merit Scholars than any other school in the country. As far as state run institutions, you wont find many that turn a profit and put it back into the "business", but this one is and its due to the Best Investment that the school has made in quite some time. His salary is a drop in the bucket to what he brings in in return and thats rare in today's world. Tell me I am missing the point again so i can laugh at you again.

Can you really guarantee that, or are you just talking out of your ass like always and speaking for entities you have no real control over or knowledge of how they use their cash flow?

and you dont get the point im making is that this really isnt something to brag about. a good school doesnt need to depend on a football program to keep the academic side of its school strong.

^^^^^
thats what you are missing.
