was only the OL coach there for 2 years iirc.
Yikes. That's an unfortunate assumption
I know we've heard great things about Conte, but it's hard to believe we'll start a R. Fr at LT. Perhaps since he's had the least time with Newsome he will have the least to unlearn...
Correct. He deserved almost no credit for any success they might have had
So if only being at a place for 2 years means a coach did nothing, does that mean Gus Malzahn did nothing at Auburn? Urban Meyer did nothing at Utah?
JMU went from mediocre to 1-AA champs and did so on the back of a strong running game. When Newsome coached at Kecoughtan they made the playoffs . They haven't done anything since. Obviously Newsome's stunk out loud at VT but he's been successful in past stops so the idea that he was hired for no reason is just dumb. He earned the chance to fail miserably.
The line that I would like to see this coming year, assuming we go to a mauler style and everyone is 10% healthy:
LT: Conte
LG: Arkema (made mistakes this year but was very aggressive, which I want)
C: Miller (man we missed him)
RG: Benedict (was not good in Newsome's line, but has the size/strength to maul)
RT: Shuman/Gibson (let em fight it out)
Well, what else are our options at tackle?
I am not even sure Goins is still on the team, and he won't be starting. Gibson got moved inside for some reason. Shuman hasn't played at all.
Pretty cool that Moorehead played in a Superbowl with his dad.
He didnt play in a super bowl with his dad, they were just the first father and son duo to both have played in and won superbowls.
I think that fixing LT became a huge priority and that's why they went for an OC with QB development strengths. Since LT was projected as a TE and since VT turned him into a QB instead, any failure with that experiment would be used against VT in the future. Now about Loeffler the OC...I've read from more than 1 Auburn fan that he (or Chizik) tried to run a pro style offense with spread players. If they could be called anything VTs O-line has been a pass blocking spread one in recent years. So Auburn's offense while trying to run the wrong system for the players they had was one of the worst in the nation. What is Loeffler going to do? Was he allowed to do what he wanted at Auburn? I mean if he couldn't recognize that the players he had weren't going to be able to execute his offense does that mean he's going to do the same thing at VT? In my opinion if you're installing a new system you do it a little at a time until you get enough of the players you want who are capable of running that new system. A good OC makes the best out of what he has and he doesn't try to fit a square peg in a round hole. It kinda looks like Beamer made sure LT stayed by picking someone who was a QB specialist but who also is very capable of fucking up the offense so he can put Stinespring back at OC. Does anyone know of a very active, non pay website where you can talk with Auburn fans?
read up on it fooz
.. he wasn't given time to get his system in place and yeah -- he was working with spread athletes so there is a little difference there but could've made it work in a season or two
.. their OL was a mess (because of injuries and a few of them had behavioral issues) .. no depth in the SEC = you're fucked
.. their QB wasn't Cam Newton and didn't fit into a pro-offense
.. chizik cut loeffler off at the knees .. it's documented how fucked up of a HC he was
.. it was one season .. give the dude a chance
it'll take time but have an ice cream cone fooz and enjoy the prospect of hope (if that's something that you're capable of doing).
It's not that I'm hopeless or doubting Loeffler's abilities in relation to Stinesprings. I'm just wondering whether Frank Beamer has been dedicating himself for unknown reasons to furthering Stinespring's career ever since he met him. The new staff will be better at getting the most out of the players and will be better recruiters. I have no doubts about either of those 2 things
Easy, Oliver.
This is not some master planned conspiracy, its VT football. Beamer would be run out of town on a rail if he tried to reinstate Stiney and he knows it. He almost was for keeping him as OC as long as he has.
And our line has been a spread pass blocking line? What team were you watching the last decade or so?
Sean Glennon basically got killed both by the fans and by the opposing defenses because the line couldn't protect him, so they inserted TT who basically ran for his life for 4 years because they couldn't keep people out of the backfield, then we had one year in 2011 where the line was actually adequate (4 seniors will eventually play well despite coaching, I suppose), then returned to making "Ole'" blocks last year.
Almost every o-lineman over there is in excess of 6'4" and at or above 300 pounds. If a decent o-line coach can't teach them to run block out of a pro set, then neither the players or coach should be at VT.
Hokie1, this is our resident titty baby Fooz. He thinks we are the worst football team in America and we have the shittiest players this side of Canada. You'll just have to roll your eyes and go about your business when you see his posts. Just wanted to introduce you two.
