the discussion was revolving around ratings no?

how's baseball doing on a national level compared to the 90s since that was rhe argument posed?

How many national telecasts are there for baseball in the regular season? A few games on ESPN? Those regional deals are huge for teams that get them.

Baseball has buoyed their numbers with increased international views.

so effectively your goal was to completely change the scope of the conversation?

The man's point was the NFL is losing domestic viewers. It isn't. Baseball is.

no doubt but you're talking about a substantial difference in programming from just cable to all of the services.

How many of those services existed or were needed prior? All movies (and serial tv shows) would go through a few channels (HBO, Showtime mostly) or to a basic cable network. Now they're fragmented all over the place and you have to pay a rental or purchase fee if you aren't on that platform. It's becoming pay per channel instead of a group rate, and the cable companies are at least partially to blame for soaking their customers. My cable bill was up to $240 or more when I canceled, for one TV with a few add ons (RedZone, HBO, Showtime) and basic internet. I can get all of that through YTTV for $100 less.

By what measure? I tried to look at national viewership, but kept getting pointed to World Series numbers, which is matchup biased.

again

you're getting substantially more programming.

HBO makes like 4 shows a year now. Its peak was like 8?

Give me a larger variety of options over NCIS Sidney (this is an actual show)

please tell me you're not trying to argue baseball has the same national appeal as it did 30 years ago

That's part of my point. Cable didn't decrease their charge for HBO despite their huge drop in new programming. Their new movie selection dropped off the map. Netflix has suffered too.

I don't need endless programming when that brings with it questionable quality or replays of old shit I've already seen. The last episodic series I have watched was Stranger Things, and even that was well after it's initial run as I don't look for that kind of content much. I want new movies or sports (if my team is playing), otherwise I'll find something else to do lol. I know I'm not their typical customer.

Are you telling me you don't have the stats either?

why do we need anything except world series

not even getting into the 60s

in the early 90s the world series had a 35 to 40 share

it now tops out at 20 at best and that would have to be Yankees Dodgers. Cubs Indians did "well'

last years series did worse than the Thursday night football game we are talking about.

World Series varies due to matchup, not a true representation of the full season. I'm curious how much the viewership has changed for regular games. 5 games of Rangers/DBacks is not a good example IMO.

I'm sure it's down overall in the US, just wanted to see the scale. The options for viewers in the early 90s were drastically different, can't expect the same levels.

and a TV used to cost a small fortune relative to household income as opposed to now.

but those 5 free channels were super awesome

It has nothing to do with tv in the "olden days". I watched every nfl playoff game for free last year. This year one will cost me extra and some I've heard claim this is a positive development. I disagree.
