So how do you grade it so far?
Solid B.

Bill is doing way more than some years past. The OT's he has brought in are solid versatile O Lineman but not the cream of the crop, he missed a couple.
He let Meyers walk but brought in Ju Ju, who may be the same guy with more YAC. He resigned A kid named Jones, which was a good thing. A RB with potential to light it up out of the backfield if his Achilles lets him.
He unloaded Smith, so TE should be in the cards draft day.

Good solid moves that are not going to set the league on fire, but are by no means let downs.

Any signings make you feel we make a different approach to the draft?
Well...we had two high dollar TE's from free agency of 2021.
I didn't see a TE getting dumped, so even though I wanted Mayer or Washington (Or Kuntz with a late round) I didn't really see it as a need. It is now.

Former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson says that BB rarely, if ever, makes trades during the free agency period unless another team calls him looking to dump a contract or has an agreement with another player and must make space. He said that Bill makes the majority of his deals when other teams call him and he can cheapen the asking price. He was in a discussion about Deandre Hopkins coming to the Pats and says he thinks it will happen on Day two of the draft.

So that would entail our giving up a pick?

I know we don't draft WR's very well but perhaps if O'Brien is involved we draft somebody that can actually make an impact? I'm not a huge fan of giving up draft picks AND big dollars, especially on a guy that's a bit older, got injured, and needed PED's to get back into the game.

Yeah we can all agree BB cannot draft WRs but hopefully BOB can. But if its a third for a proven commodity it may be worth it. My question is this, BOB is the one that ran DHOP out of Houston there may be some bitter feelings there

I just looked it up. I read this article when it was first published but forgot the gory details. While money can cure most ills I don't imagine the two would want to work together.

If you're interested.

BOB has supposedly mended the fence and Hopkins is moire than willing to come to NE because he and BB are BFFs.

Pats seem to have ended their shopping spree at WR with Juju. Hope he does better than Meyers, who was good again under a bad O strategy. Sad to see Meyers go. Time will tell.

Can’t see BB going after a true #1 which would add little value. A better offensive strategy will do wonders with current team and a few more tweaks.

I think you're right.

Possibly go after a good TE? Or do we hope Henry can live up to his billing in the new offense?

I can see Henry and most of the offense improving. No where to go but up. A good TE would be nice and beef up O line the draft.

They get screwed. They MUST pay any and all taxes in the state which they play on Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Saturday.

It is not by the state in which the team is located. The problem in CA, MA and IL is that players have to pay for 8 or 9 games played in the home stadium. For players in TN, FL, NV it's a bonus.
50% taxes on a $10 Million salary is not my definition of "being screwed".

Back to Free Agency.

Just the signings and resignings have already taken most of the Patriots' Cap space. If BB sets aside $7M for 11 picks in the draft, he has less than $2M.

Bill has never redone contracts other than Brady's to allow himself wiggle room.

The four biggest cap hits on the Patriots in 2023 are:

Matt Judon $18.1M
Hunter Henry $15.5M
Trent Brown $12.5M
Davon Godchaux $10.5M

Everyone else is under $10M. Problem? All of the top three are done after 2023 so BB can't convert anything to bonus unless the top three are willing to extend their contracts with the team.

Bill might be able to sign the guys he brought in yesterday for a chat because only the top 51 count against the cap. I can't see him going after Hopkins or OBJ. Talking about a QB is totally out of the question.

From a money standpoint, I think we're looking at the 2023 Patriots until the draft.

I think Henry will be fine now that we have a real OC
Pats just signed Mike Gesicki to a one year $9M deal.

He's had some big games against NE.

Is this the piece they needed? If he plays like his normal self this is an upgrade over Smith who never lived up to his potential in NE.

Gesicki and Henry could be interesting. I think this may close the door on BB trying to get a top WR in FA or trade? Maybe he's looking to take one at 14?

Or is this just a case of MIA and NE taking players and coaches from each other?
