There is a backstory to this. The First Order isn't a brand new entity, but rose from the remains of the empire after a bit of a power struggle. Also both writers don't seem to want to earn anything. They keep wanting to make the good guys look like the underdogs who are losing the war but keep giving them the "W" in just about most battles, at least any that involve our named characters. Not only that but this trilogy seems to want to follow the path of the original trilogy, but wants to forget that the good guys won that war, so why are they now back in pretty much the exact same position at the start of this trilogy as they were in the original? Yes 30+ years have passed so it's not out of the realm of possibility that the state of the galaxy would change but give us something as to how that change occurred! That's why a little backstory on Snoke would have gone a long way despite not needing a backstory for The Emperor in the original trilogy. Snoke was introduced into an established universe and somehow created an army (including a larger more powerful Death Star) without the benefit of tax payer funds and without the government in power doing much to put a stop to it. We were still world building when Palpetine was introduced. We didn't know the state of the galaxy before he came into power so the backstory mattered a lot less, but we eventually got it anyway.
If you are looking for consistancy, at least in the bad decisions, than mimicking Boba’s bad death with Akbar’s is a good thing. If you want them to learn from their mistakes, than Akbar’s death is beyond cringe-worthy.
I still think the newest Star Wars movie was better than all 3 prequels and Force Awakens which was basically just a reboot
My main complaint is using Pink hair instead of Admiral Akbar to save the fleet.
Why kill an iconic character off screen and give a noble death to a nobody?
I'm baffled why so many people hate this movie.
There are some flaw with the movie. Certainly the space bombers were more than a little ridiculous. But the whole series is filled with silliness like that.
What is it that you hated about this movie so much?
You could probably have a college course that breaks down what makes a good & bad movie
using Rouge One & VIII.

Fair. Honestly, one of the reasons why people seem to like Rogue One more than the others is because it was a much darker story and eschewed the cutsey stuff.
IMO, the TLJ faltered because too often they wanted to appeal to the kids with silly little penguin things and the racing animals on the casino planet. Rather than building a serious plot, they went light.
You would think that someone would eventually realize that the movies that people like the most(Rogue One, Empire Strikes Back) were the most serious.
TLJ had a great story line with Rey and Kylo. I enjoyed the scene with Luke facing down the First Order. But otherwise the non-Rey stuff was just light.
more Rey discovering her powers and less Chewy yelling at penguin chickens.
Exactly. Honestly more Chewy as key part of the movie and less as comic relief. The stupid penguin chickens were the 2nd worst thing about the movie behind the space bombers.
needed something cute to sell as a plush toy to kids... $$$$$$$ wins every time.
Did the space bombers use gravity in space? And why would they have to be so close?
doubtful, but they had to try. They would have been better off with a glow in the dark Yoda.Is it even making the money they thought it would? Maybe?
Both fair questions. You would think one of the bomber's engineers would have pointed out these seemingly crucial flaws at some point during design.
It is striking how incredibly different these movies treat space and technology and a TV show like The Expanse which is almost the polar opposite.
TLJ: Let’s “drop” bombs on the enemy’s ships while in space. Is it even making the money they thought it would? Maybe?

Maybe they used some kind of programmable magnetism instead of gravity?needed something cute to sell as a plush toy to kids... $$$$$$$ wins every time.

TLJ: Let’s “drop” bombs on the enemy’s ships while in space.
Expanse: Anyone with the tiniest of cuts in zero-G is dead because the wound can’t flush.
While Expanse is probably taking it too far, they are incorporating the science into the story. SW is ignoring the science while still ignoring the story.
If SW is a 1 on the “science” scale, and Expanse is a 10, I think the prefect spot for story-telling would be about a 7.5 or 8.
Maybe they used some kind of programmable magnetism instead of gravity?
If so, the tiniest of throw-away lines would have been huge in squashing all the hate that scene has received.
