It was a good movie although I found myself walking away slightly disappointed. I was a big time reader of the EU so it still sometimes stings having all those storylines erased. Had I just watched the movies, I think I would have completely enjoyed it

Figured I'd give it a second viewing.

Still hate it. Fuck you Ryan Johnson.

I'm baffled why so many people hate this movie.

There are some flaw with the movie. Certainly the space bombers were more than a little ridiculous. But the whole series is filled with silliness like that.

What is it that you hated about this movie so much?

My main complaint is using Pink hair instead of Admiral Akbar to save the fleet.

Why kill an iconic character off screen and give a noble death to a nobody?

THANK YOU.

That whole plot point was stupid, contrived, and riddled with fallacies but I swear it would have been infinitely more tolerable if you replaced her with Ackbar. With Ackbar, you'd at least have some built in history and understanding. Instead, you're like "who the fuck is this? What is going on? Oh she died? That's it? WTF?"

Pretty much everything.

You know how your wife/girlfriend/mother/daughter/who ever looks at Pinterest and sees this amazing looking recipe made by some professional chef or something and it's got hundreds of thousands of positive reviews. Then she makes it and it looks fucking awful and somehow it doesn't even taste good. And all she says is; "I don't understand I followed the recipe."

That's The Force Awakens.

The thing that annoys me the most though is that (original trilogy) Leia is one of the strongest female characters in all of fiction. Certainly one of the strongest from the 70's and 80's. Lando is black and blew up the second death star. C3-PO is gay, Yoda can't talk right, and all of the empire is white. The original trilogy did empowerment and diversity before it was required, and they did it subtly and without you even noticing. The Force Awakens tried to jam it down your throat and it detracted from the story.

On top of that if you complained about the forced political statement they were making, they came back and said it was because you were a racist, misogynistic, hate monger.

But mostly I just hated it because it was bad. A bad story, bad acting, bad plotting, bad pacing, bad treatment of iconic characters and none of it made any sense.

Well ok I guess. How exactly did the Force Awaken push diversity down your throat? Because they had a female lead character? Or a black one? How did the gender or the skin color of the actors affect the story?

Race and gender in these movies had absolutely zero impact.

You could have replaced any of the new non white or female characters with a white male, and the story would have been exactly the same, outside of brief romantic subplots.

If anything, THAT seems to be some peoples problems. That they're takin er jerbs.

I liked it. I never understood the backlash. But then I never got into all the books on the Stars Wars universe so I'm not as upset with any divergences from those.

Because the director said she doesn't care about catering to Star Wars fans, instead preferring to cater to her political base. We discussed this. You called it a shit show. But you're still confused.

Doubtful. Bothered is more accurate.

Art is subjective. That includes movies, music, TV shows, books etc...nobody likes everything.

But for some reason (politics) some people just cannot come to grips that most people did not enjoy this movie, and no explanation will satisfy them.

Bingo!

Too bad nobody told the feminist director that simply putting women in roles would make a good movie.

Plenty of awesome female characters have appeared in sci-fi movies (Fifth Element comes to mind) but they were great female characters with depth.

Not just women with pink hair.

Those roles could have all been played by white males and the movie would have still sucked because the script was shit.

I couldn't care less about the politics of Star Wars movies. I also don't care that people disliked the films. I don't get why people seem to be so bothered by the lead being a female. But to each their own I guess.

I don't think Rey is the problem. People loved TFA. She is a well written character. Maybe she lost some steam in TLJ. But she was the least of the problems with TLJ.

7, 8 & 9 should've been written by George Lucas and directed by someone else.

Honestly the only thing that really bothered about TLJ was the dumb space bomber sequence.

I thought the Rey/Kylo Ren story arc was really good. The rest of the film was somewhere between meh and ok to me.

I thought the Rey/Kylo Ren story arc was really good too. And I liked the red Imperial Guards. The rest of the movie was forgettable for me.

That's fair.
