I believe Shark's point is that the 5M/year in cap savings wasn't worth what it took obtain it, that it is an overall value loss for the team (ala Cousins v. Smith).
What Dean refuses to realize is, if you saved $5M a year (which we didnt) and you are no better off (which we probably arent) You gave up on the player with a brighter future (we did) and it cost you another player with a bright future and another draft pick (which again we did and it did)...
Odds are it wasnt that smashing of a deal.
They did the trade NOT because Smith was this all fired great talent we could get for less. They did it to get out of a situation they didnt want to be in. And I think the Cap was the excuse they used, not the reason for it.
