Capwise, I think it would take alot to screw the team. I think i have made it pretty clear, my issue was never from a cap perspective.

If Smith brings us a Super Bowl (or even close to one) over the next few years (three to be exact) its a great deal.

told you it would be a team friendly deal.

And as I have told you, it doesnt matter if Smith cant deliver to a level AT or higher than I expected from Cousins. We saved $13M over the next three seasons. BUt if this team isnt SERIOUS Super Bowl contenders within that time frame, it is an outright failure in my book. Because I expected the team to improve keeping Cousins, not so much right now.

more than a "few million" in savings. right Shark? Saying KC would of taken this team to be Super Bowl contenders is pure speculation. He gave no evidence that he could do that. Smith only has to get a playoff win to prove he was the right choice over KC for the situation that we were in. This could go down as one of the best traded ever for the SKins if AS does this.

The table is set for KC to succeed in Minn. So there is no excuse for him over there. I would laugh my ass off if Minn doesn't make the playoffs this year.

I agree. you will never hear this board giving Bruce props for this contract. That's the way it is around here.

you are mind numbingly stupid.

What has Bruce ever done to warrant "props"

Why should there be a half glass full outlook when Snyder has proven for nearly 20 years to be completely incompetent in putting together a consistent winner?

YOu are right, it is pure speculation. BUT it was what I speculated would and should have happened within that three year window had we retained him.

So why should I lower my acceptable expectations with Smith if he is as you have said, a better QB for less money??

27 million signing bonus over five years...a little more than five mil per season.

If he is here for three seasons, we have 12 mil in dead space. So add that 12 million back into the three years he was here, adding 4 mil to those caps. That is essentially what we are doing.

It isn’t a good deal because he won’t live out the life of his contract.

If Smith gets us that playoff win that would speak volumes. IF we ever find a way to get Barkley this offense would be crazy good.

The official numbers against the cap.

Smith is costing $5.6M lass against the cap than Cousins this year. I figured it would be around $4-5M less against the cap. I was $600k off on my highest estimate.

Again, if Smith exceeds my expectations of what Cousins would have brought, it is in fact a great deal...

But right now it is simply a good deal if you ignore any factor other than the cap.

Oh...I agree. If he brings what I believe KC was incapable of, then it was a good deal. If we go out and get Hankins and Barkley, our defense is top ten and the running game is top ten, then we should get to the SB. If we have those and AS only has 3500 yards passing, he gets zero credit.

It would have gone up if Cousin's was signed too. shark has told you that for three years now. it doesn't make the deal better or worse in either situation.

From a straight dollars to Dollars perspective, cant complain too much. Not a bad deal... cap wise.

27 million signing bonus over five years...a little more than five mil per season.

I see I’m late to the party. The Smith contract is a win/win for both sides.

The Skins are paying a relatively low yearly rate and get low cap numbers for the first 3 years with team options for 2 more years.

OTOH, it’s really good for Smith b/c, for all real purposes, he got a 3 year, fully guaranteed contract that pays him 23.6M/year (in cash terms) over that span.

In cash terms, the Skins are saving 4-4.5M/year over Cousins, but due to the structure of the Smith contract, they are saving 5M and change over Cousins for the next several years.

27M signing bonus spread over 5 years, so 5.4/year.

2018 13 salary, 5.4 bonus, 18.4 cap number
2019 15 salary, 5.4 bonus, 20.4 cap number
2020 16 salary, 5.4 bonus, 21.4 cap number (salary becomes guaranteed at start of 2019 league year)
2021 19 salary, 5.4 bonus, 24.4 cap number
2022 21 salary, 5.4 bonus, 26.4 cap number

if Smith's cut Smith after the:
2018 season, Skins lose 6.6M in cap space (21.6M dead money minus 15M in salary)
2019 season, Skins lose 16.2M in cap space (16.2M dead money, no offset b/c salary was guaranteed)
2020 season, Skins gain 8.2M in cap space (10.8M dead money minus 19M in salary)
2021 season, Skins gain 15.6M in cap space (5.4M dead money minus 21M in salary)

Cutting him after the 2019 season is cap suicide b/c the Skins would eat the 16.2M in bonus proration, but also have to carry Smith's 16M salary even though he's off the team for that season. A player not on the team would be a 32M hole in the cap. So that's not happening. That's why the contract is essentially a fully guaranteed 3 year contract with team options for 2 more years.

The Skins could cut Smith after 3 seasons b/c it'll save them 8M in cap space and they should have found a young Qb by then. This is really a win/win deal imo.

I knew it would be a team friendly deal. 5M a year in savings over KC is real savings and we are not losing any talent. That was my whole point from the get go. 15m over 3 years is real savings. This debunks Shark notion that it was just a "few million" in savings by going with Alex Smith. Also the cap numbers are low for the first 3 years.

5M and changer per year is significant cap savings. No doubt about that.

tell that to Sharky, who will continue to be negative about this team and Allen.

I believe Shark's point is that the 5M/year in cap savings wasn't worth what it took obtain it, that it is an overall value loss for the team (ala Cousins v. Smith).
