It could be that instead of using the preseason games like normal, they're treating them like training camp practices because of the lockout. And gameplanning in a preseason game is kinda pointless. I doubt many teams gather a scouting report for these games.

If you don't put in your game plan then how will you know whether or not those players can actually execute that game plan during a real game? The season opener against Seattle seems like a heck of a time to try and find out.

I believe they had a gameplan of what they wanted to do, I just think Whitner is saying we didn't gameplan against them. So I think Harbaugh wanted to do his own thing and whatever Houston did was whatever. He could be horrible or he might just not want people to see the real deal until regular season. IMHO it's a coin flip right now. But I do believe the line needs to be addressed for sure.

That sounds more logical. Harbaugh and the boys better get to work on what the 49ers want to do though because if what we saw against Houston was it, they are in trouble.

It's preseason. Every coaching staff focuses on something different.

After the Saints game Fangio said they ran plays that the players felt comfortable with so the guys can give it everything they had.

I would imagine it was the same thing against Houston as it was fairly clear the team was in full evaluation mode and not dress rehearsal mode.

Harbaugh could care less what anyone says/thinks. Everyone needs to relax, harbaugh is a a smart guy and has his own plan that he wants to use pre-season. Im sure we will see something totally different once the season starts. If we are playing like this during the regular season then we can talk about it. But hey new staff/playbook and shortened offseason, you cant really expect super bowl play out of us.

We went 4-0 last year and 3-1 the year before in pre-seaon and look how we finished those years. Just gotta wait and see.

I agree. I didn't think free agency was going well and I started to doubt "the plan". IMO that ended up turning out ok. So I am gonna trust that our coaching staff will have us ready when they count.

Which leads to this... what was the focus on in the houston game?

To evaluate depth players and guys trying to make the team. They rotated 2nd stringers in early so they would have a chance to go up against starters to see how they did against them.

Which is why the only real concerning thing to come out of this the play of the offensive line because they just go flat out whipped.

The focus of the Houston game was evaluation of his players. He was running out entire 2nd units in the 2nd quarter, something you would never see in the third game of the preseason. Obviously the OL needs some work on communication, but I don't think Harbaugh is going to tip his hand as to what his actual plans are for the regular season. He seems like a pretty secretive coach.

I just wish we would have left some defensive starters out there and just put a few second/third strtingers with them for three quarters.

Harbaugh and Roman already stated that they're gonna be switching QBs to see how they perform in particular situation. 2 minute offense, redzone, etc. Other reasons would be to evaluate depth and versatility of players. Every coaching staff uses the preseason differently. This is a non-issue, IMO.

The last coaching staff put to much emphasis on winning pre-season games instead of paying attention to the details of what pre-season is all about. I think Harbaugh has a philosophy on the pre-season and is using it as a tool to improve the team as a whole. The one thing I like about Harbaugh is he is a guy that always seems to have an "ace up his sleeve". But if we look like this in reg season we cant just all jump off the Harbaugh ship. Rebuilding a dynasty takes time.

You heard a little bit of the plan from the Jed York interview. He mentioned that it's just preseason and that the coaching staff wasn't concerned about stats or winning, just about evaluating players. Seems pretty accurate when you think about Harbaugh putting the entire #2 defense up against Houston's #1 offense.

I can understand using preseason as another form of practice, but I'd also have to think it would be nice to practice implementing game plans against a coaching staff that you're not familiar with.

I think the concerns expressed are valid and I would be surprised if Harbaugh didn't share a similar sense of concern. There is a difference between failing to execute a game plan and failing to execute position and protection fundamentals against a four-man rush. We have a lot of work to do between now and Seattle or Clemons & Bryant will do to Staley, Davis and Smith what they did to them last year.
