He's pretty much the reason why Country music sucks today. There were those that infused pop into their music and called themselves country before him, but ultimately true Country music always won out, but when Garth came around it let fags like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney know it was ok to be a pop singer and call yourself Country. There were enough of the true Country singers around to keep it alive through most of the 90's, but that was pretty much the death of Country music with the exception of a few singers you won't hear on the radio. Waylon Jennings is my hero, and this is what he had to say about Garth Brooks:

"Garth Brooks did for Country music what panty hose did for finger fuckin."

WJ's comment says it all.

We play almost exclusive classic rock here at the office, but my boss is/was a Country Music fan. He echoed your thoughts almost to the word.

I think in general Country music tried to expand on it base and become more mainstream and got away from it roots, Brooks was front and center of that I guess. The music, definitely the female dress standard became more sexy, etc. I think NASCAR kinda did the same thing for a while trying to broaden it's appeal.

And the end of the day...if it aint broke don't fix it.

I never was a K D Lang fan. Some of her music was good, but I just never connected.
I hear you. I'm mostly into her P Cline-like stuff or her great American songbook recordings and most of her duets. The stuff she writes or cowrites with Ben I don't care for. Give Shadowlands a listen on YouTube. P Cline's producer was involved, and it shows. Or her duets with T Bennett :). Oh, and there is a kick ass duet with D Yoakum called Sin City:clap:

Of all time it's Edith Piaf with Barbara Streisand a close second.

She definitely made my list. (see post #26)
I also added a supplemental list. (post#38)
Ah, cool beans. Gonna throw another name.

How about Bonnie Tyler? Total Eclipse of the Heart really shows off her range (and the video is batshit crazy! Worth a watch).

Yeah never understood the appeal for joplin, i think her vocals were unlistenable
90% of her audience was on something so there is that. Second, if she were alive we would not be discussing her. She is the beneficiary of the scarcity principle
