I like what I like. hoss.

I don't get too far beyond Skynyrd when it comes to rock. Too many whiny voiced high talkers.

And I'm a metalhead but I can appreciate the talent and the voices of Aretha, Adele, Whitney, et al. Don't have to like their music to acknowledge their greatness.

The Hee Haw Honeys get an HM

"No, we're not ones to go around spreading rumors
Why, really we're just not the gossipy kind
Oh, you'll never hear one of repeating gossip
So you better be sure and listen close the first time"

Only Whitney Houston song I've ever heard, I liked Dolly's original better.

Haven't heard an Aretha or Adele song that I can recall(probably have, just didn't know who was singing it).

Surprised Lauryn Hill hadn't been mentioned at all. IMO possibly the best voice ever.
I personally love Rihanna when she sings too.
Norah Jones being mentioned 10 deep on one persons list is a crime.
I don't think i saw Diana Krall mentioned even once either...
Colbie Caillet is another personal favorite.

But vocal talent, writing, variety and everything put together i think Adele is putting this argument to rest. She is #1 without much room even for debate or personal preference already.

Might get my man card taken from me for this, but there's something about Natalie Merchant's voice

Idk if I can rank them, but I'll throw out 5.

Whitney Houston...very powerful voice...strong at all octaves that she could hit.
Adele...her last album won me over, her songs are all about the same thing, but this woman can sing
Joss Stone...love her voice
Jill Scott...rivals Whitney's power, but more range.
Diana Krall...smooth, sultry

I said 5, but Leann Rimes has a great voice and Nora Jones, I'm just a big fan of her work.

I could listen to Norah Jones, but stuff like this makes my blood boil:

There's only a select few that can pull off a Waylon remake, and she ain't one of them. She also needs to leave Hank Sr's songs alone.

Well...she tried...hopefully it didn't sell and she won't try again...lol

I'm not well versed in country but Jrs...Country Boy Can Survive is a favorite. Back to females...Barbara Mandrell's I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool is another favorite on my ipod.

There's several exceptions, but I love most all Country music from Jimmie Rodgers back in 1927 all the way up to Alan Jackson.

Notable exceptions:

Garth Brooks
Kenny Rogers
Patsy Cline
Jim Reeves
John Denver

I like some of the newer artists they won't play on the radio. Hank III, Jamey Johnson, Shooter Jennings, etc.

Interesting...some pretty big names on the exception list....but you're not the 1st Country music lover I heard wasn't a fan of Garth...must be something there.

He's pretty much the reason why Country music sucks today. There were those that infused pop into their music and called themselves country before him, but ultimately true Country music always won out, but when Garth came around it let fags like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney know it was ok to be a pop singer and call yourself Country. There were enough of the true Country singers around to keep it alive through most of the 90's, but that was pretty much the death of Country music with the exception of a few singers you won't hear on the radio. Waylon Jennings is my hero, and this is what he had to say about Garth Brooks:

"Garth Brooks did for Country music what panty hose did for finger fuckin."

:hellno:

i may be a 90's kid, but thats not fair to Reba at all.

I'm a 90's kid too, but I'm not worried about being fair to Reba. Pretty much every song she sang was an abomination.

Bette Midler and Barbara Streisand have to be mentioned. Not a fan of female voices but these two have great voices. Annie Lennox is another great voice. Only new female voice I'll put up with is Pink.
