IMHO Carrie Underwood is the greatest female vocalist since Ann Wilson who was the greatest since Janice Joplin. What say you and why?

I expected to get Celine and Whitney. My question is why? In all fairness I do know the answer for Whitney but was never in to her music.

I can only give my opinion on rock singers, so it would be Janis Joplin and Gracie Slick.

Grace Slick had a great set of pipes.

Add Ann Wilson to my list as well as Whitney Houston.

I like Amy Lee, but she doesn't make 1st team all star in my league. Mariah Carey had incredible vocal talent, but something about her doing all the trick falsetto shit takes away from her score.

I honestly had to Google Amy Lee. I have never listened to Evanescence. This is kind of the purpose of the thread, to learn and find talent that is new to me.

Suppose it depends on how big the 1st team is. For me personally she is probably in my top 5 and assuredly in the top 10. I'd have to actually think to compile a list tho and don't really feel like it right now.

Also, despite my personal opinion on her music, (think its pretty awful) Christina Aguilera (sp?) can sing

I do not put much stock into ranking sites or even the professional critics. Musical taste is subjective and I like to think that I am a bit eclectic in my taste. I own some of everything from opera to bluegrass.

I'm with you. I almost completely stay away from anything mainstream. That is why sometimes I'll check out some online lists on these different subjects to see if I'm forgetting or discounting someone. If I were to make a list tho, I'd probably be with @fknhippie in that it would be pretty rock heavy

Janis Joplin????

That shit agonizes dogs cry two counties away.
She died from a heroin OD and for some reason people equate that to greatness.

Ann Wilson.
Gave Freddy Mercury good competition.

I prefer bluesy music ... damn I did not list Aretha or Etta or Momma Cass... but most American music is somewhat based on the blues so many contemporary musicians are really good. Melissa Etherege, Pink and Joss Stone have the kind of voice that I love.

No, but she could make you feel what she felt when writing her songs and that is greatness. PBS had a great bio on her a couple of years ago that showed where she got her lyrics. I recommend that anyone that likes classic rock watch it when they can: Janis Joplin | Janis: Little Girl Blue - About the Film | American Masters | PBS .
