oh shit, I thought they both had 3000 hits. Ted had 2654 and Barry had 2935. I find it hard to believe Bonds wasn't blackballed, the guy had a 169 OPS+ his final year. I don't think he would have limped his way to 3000.

There's no question he was blackballed.

the fact that Beane wouldn't take him as the DH for league minimum in 08 says as much.

Guy coudl've probably played 2-3 more years as a DH in the AL.

The NL central race is shaping up to be a pretty wild finish.

this is the difference to me. whatever pudge was doing, it didnt change his frame much...even after retirement. bonds...is like 3 people.
pudge was also not part of a federal investigation like bonds. those 2 things stick in voters minds.

"Back in 2003, Major League Baseball had anonymous survey steroid testing. The goal of the testing was to see if baseball truly needed a steroids testing policy. As we all know the results of the testing proved there was a steroids problem in baseball. Now, the results of that test were supposed to be anonymous, but many people were implicated as a result.

There were players like David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez whose named were eventually leaked to the press. Then there were players like Pudge who everyone automatically just assumed tested positive.

For many, Pudge’s sudden weight loss between the 2004 and 2005 seasons was indication he had been using steroids before testing was implemented, and now with testing in place, he was no longer going to use steroids. That in and of itself is not sufficient to prove he was a steroids user. Frankly, if that was all that was there, he should be elected into the Hall of Fame. However, there is one issue associated with the testing and his weight loss that gives you pause.

Pudge was actually asked if he was one of the players who had tested positive during the survey testing. His response? It was far from reassuring with him saying, “Only God knows.” (St. Louis News)."

yup, which is fine.

like ortiz, who will get in 1st ballot.

PS...05-07 pudge hit .286, slugged .434

for his career he slugged .464, and hit .296 not a big drop.

So Bonds gets penalized because he was the best player before and after steroids ?

Makes sense.

This was just another example of how dumb the MLBPA is.

And the sad thing is it's still the best union in pro sports.

They've gotten pummeled recently though.

One of the Sox's September call ups gotta be Bryce Brentz. 4th in the Int. League in OPS and 2nd in homers. In a virtual tie for the best homer rate per AB in the league. Getting long in the tooth too - probably ready for the majors and should be used as some sort of trade bait or kept as a 4th outfielder. Sox should also consider getting him some reps at 1st. Hopefully he can hit some in September.

They may need a Chris Young replacement next year if they're serious about the luxury tax.

He hasn't done too bad in his brief stints in the majors. Able to maintain a respectable average at least. Can't figure out if there is some glaring weakness in his game that the Sox have noticed or whether he was just cock blocked by higher upside guys like Bradley Betts and Benintendi.

Would have to assume he'd be in the majors if he played for a handful of other teams. Might even be a starter (or given a shot at the starters job) on some of them.

That's it and it is bullshit.

There's a handful of guys that have been systematically scapegoated and demonized for their usage of PEDs, when guys like Pudge, Ripken Jr and Ortiz just get passes.

They should all be in the HOF.

Not Pete Rose, though. Fuck that guy.

yeah, i did

bonds looked like he took roids, so he is out.

Ortiz and Pudge didn't, so they are first ballot

I still question whether Ortiz will be 1st ballot. Between the DH and the steroids he took, it might take a year or two.

I used to think Ortiz definitely wouldn't be 1st ballot because he would have been the 1st DH in the hall, and the first suspected PEDo. Now that the latter barrier has been broken, I think he's got a better chance than he did.
