Pretty close numbers here. Ziggy is obviously playing better than Avril in the run game. Ziggy has a half sack less but Ziggy's sacks have been much bigger and more impactful according to the yards. Also remember seeing a couple of Ziggy's FF being nulled by penalties.

Last but not least, Avril is playing behind an elite secondary vs ours that made numerous QB's look like Dan Marino. I've bashed Mayhew a lot but it looks like he made the right decision here. Kudos sir.

Not to mention ziggy is in his first year and is a much better deal financially and will be an elite defensive end, something avril never was or will be.

Ziggy is more athletic than Avril and fits the scheme better.

Avril had some good seasons but I never believed him to be an elite DE. And I think the fact he didn't get franchise type money last year is a good indicator most GMs didn't see him as a top 10 DE.

Considering the rough seasons those OT are having I think things worked out well for the Lions. And I am of the belief it was Xanders calling the shots on draft day.

Yes its amazing how much better a raw rookie DE is against the run compared to avril. He has elevated the lions run defense to elite and according to a thread the best ever. It is pretty damn good.

Ziggy definitely is learning on the job. The kid is probably still growing and getting stronger. He should get to 10 sacks as a rookie going against the other team's LT every week.

Forgot to mention that Ziggy also generally goes against more talented LT's while Avril almost always goes against RT's.

I could write a 35,000 word Manifesto on Cliff Avril and how narrow the scope of his abilities are. But Im not gonna. It only takes three words to sum up that selfish malcontent pure edge rusher. (I yelled those three words at Thanksgiving dinner when my uncle wanted to get dumb and talk about how much we miss him. My Grandma was like, "whoooo?")

He was a productive third round pick at least. Before he got there we had not had one of those in years. It is a shame he never built a well rounded game, he is a very good pass rusher who strips the ball better than most. He could have been elite had he bothered in the run game.
