I was thinking about some of the guys who came from my favorite DI college (where I also attended for a year) and played with the Giants (big leagues and minor leagues). It got me thinking, why not start a thread where each poster, should they choose to participate, list their favorite college and the players that they know have been with the Giants. So here is mine:

College: California State University, Fresno (aka Fresno State)

Players:
Ervin Austin, of (minor leagues)
Giuseppe Chiaramonte, c (minor leagues)
Nolan Dempsey, 2nd (minor leagues)
Robert Doig, p (minor leagues)
Mark Gardner, sp
Dan Gladden, lf
Larry Gonsalves, p (minor leagues)
Randy Goodrich, p (minor leagues)
Tom Goodwin, cf
Dean Hartgraves, rp
Steve Hosey, lf
Andrew Katchel, of (minor leagues)
Mark Lohuis, p (minor leagues)
Casey McGehee, 3rd
Zach Morgan, c (minor leagues)
Dennis Rathjen, p (minor leagues)
Jon Reelhorn, p (minor leagues)
JJ Santa Cruz, rp (minor leagues)
David Schmidt, 2nd (minor leagues)
Steve Soderstrom, sp
Robert Ulrich, p (minor leagues)
Earl Vickers, of (minor leagues)
Lee White, p (minor leagues)
Steve Wilcox, sp (minor leagues)
Scott Wolfe, 2nd (minor leagues)
Austin Wynns, c
Eddie Zosky, ss (minor leagues)

On the major league level, not many of these guys worked out for the Giants.
Hosey was barely given a chance by the org after drafting him in the 1st round in 1989.
Soderstrom had injuries that killed his career.
We all know about McGehee and his propensity to ground into the double play.
Wynns was okay as a backup catcher, but nothing special.
Gladden didn't really get a chance to play well for the Giants before they shipped him off.
Goodwin was toward the end of his career when the Giants acquired him as a backup outfielder.
Hartgraves was a career minor leaguer who got a cup of coffee with the Giants.
Gardner, my man, was the one that did well with the Giants, ably handling innings eating duties for multiple seasons.
Maybe its a good thing the Giants didn't sign Judge. Or maybe Judge would have been the first star from Fresno St to sign on the Giants.

One note on the minor league guys - Giuseppe Chiaramonte. A 5th round pick in the 1997 draft, Chiaramonte was a power hitting backstop who worked his way to AAA by 2000. He had a good year in Fresno that year but didn't get a call from the Giants. He returned to AAA in 2001, struggled in 37 games, got demoted to AA Shreveport, played 13 games there and disappeared from professional baseball. I have no idea what happened but I wonder if the Giants communicated to him that he had no future with the team and so he decided to just hang it up.

Is there a easy way to look this stuff up? I know of some notables who had more than a cup of coffee, but I likely miss some others. Nothing comprehensive on either Stanford's (grad school) or UCSB (undergrad) I can easily parse

Yes, there is. BBRef has a database of professional players from different schools. I'll give you the link for Stanford. From there, you should be able to find UCSB's database. Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA) Baseball Players | Baseball-Reference.com. You have to scroll down a ways to find all professional players from Stanford. The top section only lists big league players.
By the way, there is probably an easier way to find it, but I came across the database by clicking on the "college" name link for a player and found the database.

Cool exercise!

For me, my alma mater Nevada --

Shawn Barton P 1995-6
Ed Plank P 1978-79

That's it...that's the list. I'd forgotten about Plank; he was kind of legendary in the department. Barton I knew of; met him at an alumni function about 20 years ago.

Sadly, Lyle Overbay, Chad Qualls and Kevin Kouzmanoff were never Giants.

Looks like there were about 7 guys who've gone through the farm system as well but none since 2001 (Matt Wells).

PTMFB
Huffer
FP
Biagini
Jacob Heyward
Andrew Suarez
Shawn Purdy (yes, THAT Shawn Purdy)

I graduated from Western Michigan, though…

Pat Misch
John Vander Wal (part of the Schmidt trade)

We didn't have much of a baseball team.

tbh I was surprised at the lack of Stanford notables given Stanford's history,

Pedo is an almost, playing at Paly (Palo Alto High) literally 1/4mi from Sunken Diamond

I was a bit surprised when I saw the list. Fresno State may have had more notable players than Stanford, at least in the Giants' org. And that is not saying much.
