Might mean the end of Golden Tate as a Seahawk

Known for leaving no stone unturned while building their roster, the Seahawks have again turned to the Canadian Football League for their latest addition.
The team announced Tuesday it has signed wide receiver Chris Matthews to a futures contract.
Matthews, 24, was undrafted out of Kentucky in 2012. He signed with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and caught 81 passes for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns en route to winning the league's rookie of the year award. He caught 14 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown in 2013, missing 13 of 18 games because of injuries.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 227 pounds, Matthews becomes the biggest receiver on Seattle's roster.
The Seahawks struck gold three years ago with cornerback Brandon Browner, who blossomed into a starter and made a Pro Bowl with Seattle after a stint in the CFL. Matthews has a long way to go to even stick with the team, but he'll get a chance to compete to be the big-bodied target that Seattle didn't have last season once Sidney Rice went down with a knee injury.

Interesting signing. JS/PC leave no stone unturned. Rookie of the year in CFL? Good size. I like it!

Sounds like a pretty good signing. What exactly are the team's consequences when signing a futures contract anyways? Is it basically something that states if you make the roster, you'll get paid X amount of money?

If so this may just mean that Pete wants some added competition in the offseason and probably wouldn't effect Tate

Looks like a big guy, but not a burner. Added competition.

I like it.. We can use some size at the receiver spot…. Hopefully Tate still signs though… We know Rice is gone for sure..

At 6'5", we're WO hunting. Don't see this as a Tate replacement move.

This move has zero impact on Tate IMO. This is an attempt to gain the big receiver that PC/JS havent been able to hit on. Guys like Mike Williams and Sidney Rice havent panned out and they whiffed on drafting Chris Harper last year. I wouldnt be shocked to see Tate still signed and another guy added somewhere in the draft.

I don't believe this will affect golden tate but it almost for sure means that sidney rice is gone. Rice was our tallest receiver and even before the injury he wasn't really producing. If tate signs this could also mean we might not go high on a receiver in the draft.

RoY, sure, but no one has asked why he missed 13 of 18 games last year due to injuries. Freak, lingering nuisances or is the guy injury prone? 13 of 18 is a lot to say the guy is anything more than a very low risk theyre just gonna let try. I dont think it means anything regarding our current corps.

I bet he doesn't even make the team. WR in the Canadian league get that 5 yard head start and he still couldn't get any separation. Then after catching the ball he would go down instantly. But what ever, the signing doesn't hurt them and like Pete and JS have done before "leave no stone unturned"

I was reading that the Seahawks might keep Tate and try to trade Baldwin instead.

Not sure how I feel about that. I trust the staff more than my own judgement but I personally would rather keep Baldwin over Tate all things considered (including what it will cost in salary cap).

Both Baldwin and Harvin play the slot. Too much overlap.

I don't feel that this is necessarily the end to Tate. Personally, after I watched some of his highlights I instantly thought Tight End. He's too slow for the NFL at WR, but could be a great TE. So with that being said, my guess is he may be replacing Zach Miller.........just saying.

also this move says more about Rice than Tate. We all know the chances of the Hawks cutting Rice are almost 100%. They would now need a big body WR to replace him and this move is just for that reason. It has nothing to do with Tate in my eyes. If Tate Signs elsewhere then they will make another move or draft a WR higher than they would have before.

I heard an interview on KJR last night in the car about 6:45 pm with the quarterback of the team (can't remember his name), and he said that Chris had a bad groin pull and some injury to his foot. He really talked him up and gave both Matthews' pros and cons, though I can't remember exactly what was said.

This is solely to replace the incoming release of Sidney Rice. Nobody will trade for that contract.

I also would not be surprised if Seattle drafts defense 1st round (D-Line or CB). Thurmond could be gone and if Browner doesn't return that might leave us thin.

Seattle will draft defense and everyone will go "AWWWWW WHAT?!" I could totally see something like cornerback and everyone loses their shit.

The QB was Alex Brink, former WSU QB. It sounded like basically the pros were he has great work ethic and has a skill set comparable to Jimmy Grahmn. When asked to compare him to Mike Williams, said he's seen both guys work out and Chris Matthews has far more drive and competitive edge then Mike Williams. Cons I think he basically just said he was slow.
