At 170k though, with probably many multiple owners, no lifetime service records…

That $5k can turn into a lot more very quickly. But I’d very much like a pristine version (I know I know, we all want the unicorn).

Speaking of unicorns, found this VW Synchro wagon the other day (also on Van Island)

Man, it's a beauty, but that 140 grand sticker price is a little out of my range.

Here's one for 43 - a 2002 GTI 337 (6 speed with the golf ball shifter and Recaro seats) and a 135 grand less than the Ford GT.

Only 5 Grand for a 337?

The gearbox is grinding away. I guarantee it.

Still might be worth a shot though. Just for a Golf without the Mexican Wiring.

^ I wonder what generation engine that has? If it's a third generation or older, it makes it much easier to hot wire for those of you ambitious entrepreneurial types out there.

How far is Hamburg, PA from you 43? There's a 1990 Corrado for sale (looks pretty nice).

About 8 hours away, apparently.

Reading the Article, someone took out the stock wimp-motor and replaced it with Volkswagen's famously bad 1.8T. Seems in decent shape otherwise, but the guy would have sold it in minutes if he'd swapped in the VR6.

I will own a Corrado someday.

Remember, Chrysler couldn't build a decent car with Mercedes' help.

Completely useless.
Funnily enough, I usually blame the Germans for that failure. They made some horrible leadership moves at Chrysler after taking it over and then basically stopped making cheap cars in an era when Americans were abandoning gas guzzlers.

Mercedes as a unit weren't exactly expertly run from the mid-90s until they divested themselves of Chrysler (they made other bad acquisitions, too). They lost a lot of market share to BMW until they got Bangled.

As an example of the "love" Daimler showed to Chrysler during that era, here's the interior of an 05 Dodge Magnum

and an 05 Mercedes C:

These cars were only a few thousand dollars apart brand new.

That is true that Daimler wasn't keen on sharing non technical parts with Chrysler at first, but Chrysler also didn't accept a lot in the form of improving reliability, which was awful. Mercedes shared engines, suspensions and transmissions and Chrysler hardly used any of it.

Where Chrysler really screwed up was considering it a merger when they should have actually bought Mercedes. They yielded to Mercedes culture and acted surprised when Mercedes people put all the focus on the Mercedes brand.

But in the end, it was good it went that way because it took Zetche from Daimler to go to Detroit and wrestle Chrysler into profitability enough to spin it off. The management in America was a bunch of idiots.

A fact that Fiat is now dealing with.

But wasn't it Zetche who would've been in charge of accepting the Mercedes parts anyway since he was CEO of Chrysler for 90% of the time Daimler owned them?

I was under the impression that he came in after a few years of letting the old school Chrysler guys have at it.

You're...half right.

Chrysler had some pretty good execs in those 90s good times I mentioned earlier. Stuttgart promptly sacked them all and installed the dullest bulb in the building as CEO. After he spent 18 months completely shitting the bed, they put Dr. Z in.
