i wasn't meant to be whiny, it's merely the fact that i know i will NOT be able to get tickets even if they gave every single one to the open public...so my already miniscule chances are dropped significantly with every caps full/partial STH getting a shot. sorry for being bitter...it's a sense of entitlement i suppose because it's a "home" game.

I don't see anything wrong with them giving Caps STH a chance to buy them before they go on sale to the public. This is an incentive for fans of both teams to buy season tickets. There is room in the stadeum for STH from both teams and then some. The more Caps fans making their way to this game the better it will be for the local economy in Pittsburgh (including the Pens). Besides how could you only offer some Caps' STH tickets and not offer it to all of them?

Easy for me to say since I don't live anywhere near either city and never really considered attending. But if I was a non STH Pens fan I'd still think it was fair but that wouldn't mean I had to like it.

My only concern is how may Caps STH that will not be able or willing to make the trip are going to buy them anyway and then scalp them? Probably all of them. I'm sure a smaller percentage of Pens STH will be doing the same. Its a shame but it is what it is and there isn't much they can do about it. Its one of the perks of being a STH.

Just an FYI from Ted Leonsis' Web site. Looks like Caps' fans with full- or partial-season ticket plans will be able to buy tickets.

From August 3rd posting on "Ted's Take"...

Before the drop of the puck at the first Winter Classic, I was emailing Gary Bettman about the possibility of the Capitals participating in what has become a signature event for the league. We wanted to host a game, but the NHL wanted to pair us with Pittsburgh, showcasing one of the best rivalries in the NHL. Since Pittsburgh had been the visiting team in a prior Winter Classic, the thought was the Penguins should be given the opportunity to host a game. So we agreed, but also were assured we would be able to host a Winter Classic in the upcoming years. That’s a win-win for us.

As our fan base has grown and its level of interest and intensity has escalated, we knew a significant number of Caps fans would want to be a part of the franchise’s first Winter Classic appearance. Therefore, one of the most important aspects of our Winter Classic discussions was our ability to secure enough tickets to accommodate our season-ticket holders.

This was an extremely challenging process, but a necessary one for our plan holders. And I thank Commissioner Bettman and his staff for working with us and making this a reality for Caps fans.

I am excited to announce that ALL suite and club seat holders as well as ALL full and partial season-ticket accounts will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. In the upcoming days plan holders will be receiving details in the mail pertaining to the Winter Classic and their season-ticket account.

As you might imagine, we have received thousands of requests from Caps fans who would like to buy tickets but don’t own season tickets. We will have an extremely limited amount of travel packages that will be available for the general public, including a three-day, two-night option and a one-day trip opportunity. Please keep an eye out in the next couple of weeks for those details on WashingtonCaps.com and through our Ice Chips newsletter.

We’re playing at Heinz Field, and I know they have a huge ketchup bottle that turns the scoreboard red whenever the Steelers enter the “red zone.” I think it would be hospitable of us to bring our own version of “red” and show the NBC audience how to Rock the Red on New Year’s Day.

See you in Pittsburgh!

Bandwagon!!!!...lmao.....sorry, I just had 3 wine coolers and may be a little tipsy...

My issue is with the fact that every other visiting winter classic team was given 5K tickets. Why change it for this one?

I hope the Penguins ones just go on sale and they don't do a lottery.

Because Uncle Ted is just that good? ;) I don't know. Sounds like it was part of the deal they brokered.

Well, the last two were in baseball stadiums, so that may be part of the reason. A 5,000 limit seems silly to me though, no matter the team. And yet another argument for doing these in FOOTBALL stadiums, not baseball ones. I mean, the NHL officials in charge of this thing clearly did not have one of these as a child...

I agree about the baseball stadiums. I still think they went with more tickets for Caps fans to showcase the "NHL's best rivalry".

Hopefully it's just first come first serve for the public. I'm confident I could get more for my friends if they do it that way and not a lottery.

I think Ted's a smart owner and wanted some bennies for his season ticket holders. Maybe they will market it as that.

It's actually too bad they don't go home side/away side for these games (I don't know, I wonder if they've put the Caps' fans tickets all in similar sections) If you've ever been to a British soccer game, that is how they are all done. They will kick you out if you are cheering for the other team on the "wrong" side of the stadium. It makes for a pretty electric atmosphere. It's also smart for security reasons.

I just hope I can get a ticket. :)

The Insider On Pittsburgh Sports - Penguins season ticket holders express frustrations over Winter Classic tickets

okay, so these are the opinions that i poorly attempted to convey. it's the fact that the visiting team demanded double what previous teams have (not a biggie), and that the caps STH are getting first shot along with the pens. i guess i wouldn't be as disillusioned if the pens STH were getting first shot at good seats, not being assigned cruddy ones. oh well, it's a regular season game that i hope the pens win.

My brother just got an email about his package (Caps STH) and the tickets are only going to be an additional $70 for us, and for $130 more we can buy a package that has an additional ticket and parking...

wow. 70??? is he full or partial package? and what is the 70, just a processing fee or some other ridiculous payment? from reading that article it seems like things have gotten out of hand since 08. i assume prices were sky high the last few seasons being in baseball stadiums, but it looks like the prices have stayed the same even though the stadium is bigger.

It is $70 for the ticket to the Winter classic, on top of the season package price (the 41 home games). Additionally, he can buy a second winter classic ticket and a parking pass for $130, meaning that every caps STH can buy TWO tickets if they so choose for $200....

Whhhhat?! what i understood from the article is that pens STH are charged 130/ticket outside of their normal package. so, basically, they're paying more? something just seems off about all of this. i'd be ticked if i were a STH because like the one guy said, some people are paying 130+ for an aluminum bench while others are paying 130 for a much better seat.

yEAH IT'S WEIRD. tHE cAPS FANS ARE GETTING TWO FOR $200 AND PARKING AND IT IS NOT EVEN ONE OF THE GAMES THAT COMES WITH THEIR PACKAGE (SINCE IT IS A ROAD GAME) AND pENS FANS ARE GETTING CHARGED $130 additional to pay for a ticket to a home game that they have, essentially had to pay for and are having to wait and see about a second game ticket.

(sorry for the caps lock but i didnt want to retype)

The winter classic is NOT included in Pens STH packages. We get 40 home games and 2 preseason games. The winter classic is a whole different animal. We (as an sth) are assigned seats which we can buy if we want. The 150$ per ticket mine cost is it. We weren't charged for a 41st home game originally.

Also the NHL is in charge of ticketing, the penguins and the capitals have no say in setting costs, availability etc... from what i understand.
